Years n years ago in choir we sang a piece that was a duet for cats, in three short movements. It was a lot of fun... it was either in Italian or the edition was Italian. I don't really know how to describe it... the words were essentially "miaou, miaou, miaou!", and while I could sing bits of it to you still from memory (we did it a couple of times and it was pretty memorable to a bunch of pre adolescents who thought it was hilarious!) but that's kinda hard over the 'net! Anyway... has ANYONE heard of this? Do you have a clue what I'm talking about/who it's by/where I might be able to get it?? The arrangement we sang was just two voices and piano I believe. I have no idea who wrote it or what range it was... help!

Oh well at least you've heard of it - it's not just a figment of my fevered imagination!

Someone I know sang it at a concert once! It's cool!

If you mean Rossini's "Duetto Buffo di due Gatti" - yes. It's hilarious.
I wanted to do it at the last Adult Learners' Concert, but the person I was planning to do it with wasn't able to make the day in the end. Shame!
Of course, if anyone wants to have a look at it for an upcoming concert, give me a shout...
Cheers

katyjay - quite possibly the one! unfortunately, given the words, I can't think of a way to check, but I can't imagine there are MANY duets for two cats...?
I know it but I think I'd make a poor showing singing it with someone who can actually sing...
Any place I could order the music online, do you think...?

Is it
this one? (no 12 on disc 2)
It can be ordered from Warblers, I think.

It's only £1.20 to download!! Might get it myself...
I like knowing that Rossini had a sense of humour....

Are we talking about the Hinge & Brackett version?

I printed the music from that sight - going to try it with a friend who'd never even heard of it. She has a good sense of humour - I think she'll enjoy it!
Thanks so much, folks!

The Opera Babes sang it at the Open Air concert at Leeds Castle recently.
Very amusing.
Going slightly off topic here, but still relevant in that it's humourous - has anyone heard a song called (I think) "I Want To Be An Opera Singer."? I heard Patricia Routledge perform it on television a few years back, and it was hilarious and brilliant. She had a good voice too, I recall.

Amber - the song you are referring to is called "I want to sing in Opera". You're right - it's very funny, especially sung by somebody who can really ham it up. Our Am-Dram society lady's chorus did it for a cabaret a few years back. I may still have a copy lurking around and if so, I'll post the composer/arranger etc.
Katyjay- I'm game for a go at the Cat Duet! I've had a copy for years but never actually had an opportunity to sing it...

Is that the same as "Art is calling me" or another one? I seem to recall that one ("I want to be a prima donna donna donna,", then I think it says "I want to shine upon the stage"??) is very funny!

They're both different songs (I think I've heard Lesley Garrett do the "Prima Donna" one). I've tracked down the one Patricia Roultedge sang, and it's by Worton David and George Arthurs. Lyrics as follows:
I'm getting so tired of these comedy songs, I want to sing something divine,
I'm sure and I'm certain to shine, as a star in the opera line.
I simply love Wagner, Mozart and Puccini, their music is simply tip-top,
So I mean to change my name Bloggs to Bloggini and see if I can't get a "shop"!
(Chorus)
I want to sing in opera, I've got that type of voice,
I'd always sing in opera if I could have my choice.
Signor Caruso told me I ought to do so,
That's why I want to sing in op'ra - sing in op-pop-pop-pop-e-ra! Hoorah!
I want to play Carmen, I just love the part, The music's so awfully sweet!
And all prima donnas I'd beat, if in Faust I'd played fair Margueritte,
I'd warble and trill like a human canary in recitative or duet -
But managers seem to be just a bit wary, my chance hasn't happened as yet!
(Chorus)
I want to sing etc etc
Lots of opportunity for comedy cadenzas on the last "hoorah", etc.
