Hi everyone, i took my grade 3 piano exam on thursday (1/4/04) and im convinced ive failed

It didnt help my confidence when 2 boys the same age as me walked in (im 16 by the way) and i saw they were doing grade 8 piano

In my exam, i played a broken chord wrong and slipped up on 2 arpeggios and also had a restart on my first piece!! sad.gif This has happened to me before but it was only grade 1 and i think the examiner expected a few mistakes on a first exam

Im really scared that ive failed becaused I worked so hard to be ready in time (as well as gcse music and art practicals and general gcse prep at the same time) I also play another 3 instruments which i had to fit practice time in for as well

Has anyone else had this experience and if so what was the outcome? Do the examiners allow for some nerves and are the mistakes I ade enough to make me fail? The aural and sight reading were ok (which makes a change for me!!)

Any advice would be grately appreciated

thanx a lot

Hi Charl its a horrible feeling isnt it, when you have worked so hard!!

I worked really hard for my grade 5 clarinet and then came out soooo angry at myself for messing up! I ended up just getting a 100 which was rubbish so im retaking it. Try not to worry too much the examiners do take note that you get nervous so you should be fine. and even if the worst happens you can still do it again! Let us know when you get your results and in the meantime try and forget about it!!!
good luck

I know you must feel bad now but I bet you haven't done half as bad as you think you have!
Just before Christmas I took a piano exam and came out thinking it had gone really badly and that I had failed etc. because I totally messed up the aural and my first piece but when my results came I had scored 138 and got a distinction so it just shows that there is room for error!

Hi Charl!

Don't worry, I know the feeling you have. Last summer, I did my grade 4 violin exam and I thought that I screwed up big time. So after the exam, I went on holidays and got my results back which to be honest with you wasnt that bad! 118. Just think to yourself, when you do an exam you are just proving to your teacher and the examiner that you now the different types of tequnices etc. you have learnt. Well if you fail, just go on to the next grade and just think to yourself that you can do it. Next time dont panic as much so you will probably get a better mark!

hi Charl!

u dont have to worry so much! when i was in grade 3, i did quite a lot of mistakes to! and i DID pass! sometimes, examiners know and understand how you feel... so i'd say, dont worry too much! everything will be fine! even though u think that u've failed, dont be too upset. there's always next year and u can always try harder! i too know how it feels. it happened to me a couple of times too!

all the best!

Hi i'd just like to say, dont worry about it, i took my grade three last summer, i was 17 at the time and i'd only been playing for 8 months. If you fail you fail i know its not the result you wanted but theres really know point in worrying about it know cos whats dont is done. ( i know this sounds kinda harsh)
I'd also just like to say to nat that you passed i know only just but really is there any point in you retaking you grade five because you have a pass so why not start on grade six because if you work hard for that then once you have done it and hopefully got a better grade, what you got in grade five will really not be relavant. Why waste time on something that you can already do when you could be progressing.
Anyway thats just my opinion and good luck for the results i really sure you havent done as badly as you think you have done.

Well, there is quite a lot of hope actually because I screwed up way more than you did (basically couldn't play most of the scales and didn't even know a single answer to the aural training). By the way, this was for Piano Grade 8 and I ended up with 100. (Whew!)

P.S. Don't worry, anything from 100-119 is still a pass on the certificate.
