Can anybody recommend a good recording of Paganini's 24 Caprices?
indy
Ivan Kawaciuk's version.
But then its the only one I have and have heard, and I'm no violinist!

I've just found another version - by my favorite Ichak Perlman (I knew I had it somewhere!)
Will listen to both and let you know which I prefer!

Avoid Ruggiero Ricci's recordings, any of them and he's made a few. How he manages to play so scratchily I don't know.

I didn't like Midori either. She's accurate but I've learned to avoid very young players at works like this. They may be technically accomplished but they haven't always accomplished the art behind these pieces. Not to rule them out altogether, obviously but I'll listen to the CD first.

So there's two to hear before you buy!

The Perlman suggested by indy_ has to be a contender.

I've not heard any of the versions mentioned here so far.

I have Salvatore Accardo which I do like....or you might like to try Alexander Markov, Paganini is his speciality (he even looks like him) and has been known to play all the caprices live in one concert.

I've got Markov's recording of the 24 caprices, and really like it. They're mind-bogglingly difficult to play properly, so really good recordings/performances are fairly few and far between.

I thought it was good but i see what you mean about scratchiness in places. However i think possibly Midori was better.

After listening to various recordings and beign stunned by the Gallopin' Greek Kavakos, Viohazard settled on a Michael Rabin recording as his curent favorite for careful listening.

Any other favourites?
