Full Version: Jazz Syllabus Getting Stale?

I wonder if the ABRSM has given any thought to this? The present jazz syllabus is now approximately 2 years old for horn players, namely- saxophone (tenor & alto),trumpet and trombone. Has any plans been put forward to update the syllabus with new material like the you do with the classical syllabus? I know for myself i'm finding the present material a bit stale now as students tend to pick the same pieces for the various grades presently available. Thoughts very welcome.

Not all the music for all instruments changes every two years even for the classical syllabuses. The flute one I believe is staying the same, and the current and previous viola syllabuses are the same. I think instruments which have masses of music change more often, and the music comes around possibly less frequently (people seem to be learning for violin grades 4-5 music that I did when I did those exams laugh.gif makes me feel old!) but having syllabuses that are more than 2 years old isn't that unusual I don't think.

Whilst i recognise jazz standards are recognised as 'classics', variety is the spice of life. For example if i played the same pieces every week in my big band with no new numbers ever added to the sessions i think i'd see a few sad faces.

Of course - but all the same the AB has many, many syllabuses - they can't change every one every two years. The Jazz one isn't that old by the standards of the others!
