I'm thinking of working towards a performance diploma on flute. Besides the AB ones which ones do people usually take?

ATCL seems to be popular and they have the Performer's Certificate as a post grade 8 qualification too. ALCM is a possibility (written paper to do though) with a dipLCM as a "half way measure". Guildhall may just still have one (they've been taken over by Trinity but some of the diplomas are still available). Beyond that you're into the smaller unaccredited boards.

If you hjave a good memory and want to avoid a written paper, the LLCM Performers' Recital Diploma is a good bet.

Trinity offere a choice between the ATCL Recital and the ATCL Performance. The latter involves scales, I believe. They've now made the LTCL Recital only.

Another thing is a trinity performers certifcate. Its listed after grade 8 in their syllabus. I think its probably half way between grade 8 and DipABRSM because its purely performance and no written section.

DipICMA, FDipICMA, PPICMA (Independent Contemporary Music Awards)

I recommend that you don't always go for the obvious exam boards before checking out other options.
