Full Version: Another Result But What An Achievement

Just to let everyone know that my son has finally worked his socks off and got his high honours that he desparately wanted after nearly 20 months of group tuition.

He got 300/320 for his grade 4 trumpet. I am so pleased for him. As he has sat an exam every term so far and managed honours. His inspiration is to get into the highest county band which is of an extremely high standard.

It amazes me as he lost most of his marks on his aural - that hearing loss is part of it but he still finds aural really hard. Do you think boys aural improve with age. He is 9 and cant sing in tune even though I practise with him all the time.

Well done thats a great achievement for you and him! smile.gif

nice one frumpbybabes!

I am stunned how well they both did to be honest. It is quiet scary !! Starting grade 5 on 2 instruments and he is not 10 yet. I wasnt even on grade 4 on 1 instrument at 10.
Starting to really get their theory going now as it will be so important to sit that theory exam in the next 18 months or so. They are enjoying the theory but neatness is there biggest trial at the moment.

Well done to him indeed! What board is this? I've not come across one that marks out of 320 huh.gif

Sorry Liz I have only got his result through his teacher via the school secretary. It is Guildhall and I have not even had the mark sheet yet. What worries me now is that now you said that I have looked at Margarets post and she said that it is out of 300 so how can he had score 300 and still losts marks on aural. I need to ring his teacher and get the break down.

Looks like the school put 2+2 and got 5 but he definitely got high honours.... um..... dont know what is going on.

It is definitely out of 300 for Guildhall, the high honours boundary is 270. (which is frankly amazing!)

impressive stuff

It is definitely Guildhall and it is out of 320 not 300. The pass mark is 160 and you need 285 to score high honours.

Maybe it is different for strings/piano/woodwind but the information I have is correct. 300/320.

So Nicki what is the pass mark for flute, and Liz for strings? Would have thought it was the same for all instruments but obviously not.

I have just looked at the back of the mark sheet. We have Form B for Brass which is out of 320 and there is also Form A which is out of 300. It doesnt say which instruments Form A is used for.

Glad that is clear up now. But which instruments are marked out of 300?
frumpybabes
The extra marks on brass come from flexibility which is 16 and understanding 28 not 24.

Yes, I have just been talking to a vocalist (stacetheace8) as I thought all Guildhall exams were the same. In her case vocal exams were out of 270, but all my exams have been out of 300.

finally got his mark sheet.

Piece 1 50/52
Piece 2 51/52
Study 52/52

Scales/arpeggio 32/32
Flexibility 16/16
Sight Reading 32/32

Aural 21/32
Musicianship 22/24 (full marks in gr2 and 3)
Understanding 24/28 (full marks in gr2 and 3)

So his performance was basically outstanding. Very scary mark sheet. The highest performance I have seen in all my teaching. Must brush up on the theory and viva next time... didnt really prompt him on those as he scored so well the last 2 times.

Certainly is. But what is "flexibility" ?

Well done to him- that is fab!

flexibility is lip slurring.

OK.... the best I can describe it is to slur all the open notes of the trumpet together in various combination by adjusting their lip tension. It is a set exercise which starts with a theme of open notes and then they start using the valves but the same open notes( this makes different notes). Does that make sense?

It is really hard to do much harder than scales I think. As you really have to control both breathe and lips to get the higher notes.

He had to play them 3 times a day to get them right. Your lips get knackered if you try to play them more than 2-3 times in a row so he had to spread out the practise through the day. It was have a lip slur before a meal smile.gif

Well, one learns something every day!
Oddball
They can be truly nasty. Especially with all valves down as well.... blink.gif

That is really good!!!!!

It is good to hear about someone, who obviosly enjoys playing and works hard to get good marks. biggrin.gif
