I've just done my Grade 3, and since I won't be having a lesson all summer, I've decided to look at some of the Grade 4 pieces, though I may not necessarily play them in the exam. Which ones did you like, and which ones are nice to play? Thanks.

Mozart's Voi Che Sapete is amazing, and if Nat were here, believe me she would agree!

The Jim Parker stuff is good, quite fun to play, so is the Gershwin!

the Lefevre Sonata in G minor is a nice piece to play and it isnt terribly complicated either, a fine example of early classical era music and a GREAT example of one of the first pieces of music written for clarinet

Yup, Voi Che Sapete I adore! I was playing it before my lesson, at the music school I go to, and this random lady came in saying how beautifully I played the music, and how it reminded her of a scene from Pride and Prejudice where somebody's playing the piano for Mr.Darcy! It really lifted my spirits, as it wasn't long before my exam! biggrin.gif And, I got a good mark for it - the examiner even smiled, and said "Very lovely", nodding tongue.gif

Thanks for the advice! I might try the Mozart one... any idea which book it might be in? Or would I have to get an exam book?

It depends how old you are and what sort of music you like. My daughter and her friend both couldn't stand the Mozart although I (their teacher) loved it. They played the Bizet and Donkey Ride which I think were better for their maturity (both were 10). The Mozart is nice though.

I don't know if it is on the syllabus but Inter-City Stomp is a nice piece to play if you like jazz. I seem to remember playing it when I was about grade 3/4 standard. You can find it in Microjazz for Clarinet book 2. This book should also last you up to grade 5, so it is a worthwhile investment.

I took G4 in December and I am having trouble remembering which I played!

I just found the mark sheet...

A. Seguidilla - Bizet (27/30)
B. Donkey Ride - Harris (sorry, but that piece is AWESOME!) (27/30)
C. No. 28 from progressive studies - Allen (28/30)

I didn't realise that Voi Che Sapete (one of my all time favourites - probably because of Mr Darcy, Yabba) was on the syllabus... otherwise I would have played it.

So, as long as you like it, I would go for Voi che Sapete - it's wonderful and I like the ones I played for A and B as well.

Make sure you get your own copy of the syllabus before you start work for your next exam! Actually I expect you can find it on this Web site but I haven't looked.

Yes, indeed it is, you might want the Grade 4 Clarinet Syllabus or the Complete Clarinet Syllabus which covers all of the grades.

Ooops. It's a bit late...I've already taken the G5 one, but I think I trust my teachers judgement as regards the syllabus and what he thinks I would be best at. But I'll look at the G6 before I do it.
