MMmmmmmmmm - will think and get back to you. I did double bass and second study many years ago at uni - but havent played since - children and the piano have come in the way ever since. So will rack my brains and let you know soon..

The conductor/double-bassist Serge Koussevitsky wrote a few works for the double bass. One of them is a three-movement concerto.

Hindemith wrote something for everything - even the heckelphone of all things!

There's a double concerto for Cello & Double Bass, but I don't remember who wrote it! Someone still alive, they performed it with Yo-yo Ma (I don't know how to spell it!).

Double Bass concertos are unfortunately rare (like contrabassoon concertos, it's really a shame), but I suppose as a composer you'd really have to know what you were doing. Audiences don't pay much attention to lower notes because they expect the "important" parts to be higher, so there is a big issue of redirecting the audience's aural attention to the appropriate register.
cold elephant
Double Bass Concerti are more numerous than you might think, yet they are hardly ever performed, largely due to the tiny numbers of proficient solo players (they do exist, and there are some good players out there - edgar meyer, hakan ehren, duncan mctier, to name but three) and balance problems as the double bass doesnt have a great sound in terms of carrying well.

Eduard Tubin wrote a concerto (recorded by Hakan Ehren) which is an AMAZING piece of music whch i would recommend to anyone. others include 2 by Bottesini, Peter Maxwell Davies (interesting one, this) Lalo Schifrin (composer of the misson impossible theme?) J B Vanhal, Dittersdorf, Lars-Erik Larsson (concertino). perhaps people would like to check these out and say what they think (EPECIALLY THE TUBIN!!...........ahem.)

Theres a Music Minus One recording with David Walter if you can get hold of it. I played the Capuzzi for my A-level recital, its fantastic (the arpeggios in the 2nd movement!).
Theres also the Ridout concerto which is grade 8 and lots of fun. The Hindemith sonata is what I'm learning at the moment- its so cool!
Koussevitsky wrote a concerto and many concert pieces. I cant think of a lot else that isnt Dragonetti, Dittersdorf or Bottesini. Normally we just steal the cello stuff.
Note to self: write a double bass concerto thats interesting!

Incredible isn't it?? biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif I mean, Vengerov is great, but that piece was afterall written for the fiddle. My jaw just dropped seeing it played on the bass!
