In the Vals Poetico, should the pedal be used to slur the 'um's to the 'cha's? Also, should it be used to sustain the 2nd 'cha's so that there is time to move the left hand back down?

Thanks smile.gif

The teacher's notes suggest that you pedal by the bar for the first 18 bars, then from bar 19 clear for the third beat - similar to what Tabitha said.

Not sure if this specifically answers your question - that's the only mention of pedal in the notes though.

Thanks, that helps a lot! smile.gif

Oh, an I also take it that the repeat should be played since it's such a short piece?

I play the pedal throughout. When there are big jumps in any piece, even if it's not marked, I always use the pedal.

I also repeat it, because it's such a short piece and it's a pity to just play it through once... also I like how the first section ends than the second one. I'm not sure if you're allowed to repeat in the exam though, because examiners usually don't like repeats because it takes up time... but since it's so short...

Anyway, I love Vals Poetico! It didn't jump out at me at first, but the more I play it, the more I like it.

i used the pedal a lot in grade 5 and the examiner was not impressed watch out!It was probably just me using it where you are not meant too!

Which piece in Grade 5 did you use the pedal in, grand piano girl?

I didn't use pedal in this piece and still got 25 for it.

I originally posted on this thread saying that I use pedal throughout but after having a real listen to the CD I can hear that the pedal is not used all the time & taken off in certain parts. It's too complicated to explain on here but if anyone's debating whether or not to use pedal in this piece then I suggest you listen really hard to the CD (if you have it) and you may just change your mind about when & when not to use it. I prefer how I play it now (taking it off in certain bits) to how I played it before (pedal down all the way through) as it makes it sound more dance-y smile.gif & doesn't sound mushy which was what I didn't like about it originally.

I use the pedal throughout vals poetico. My piano teacher told me to and i think it sounds a lot better. What other pieces are you doing? I chose A:3 Allegro by J.L Dussek (we had a competition at school and I won with this piece! biggrin.gif !) Then B:3- Vals poetico and C:1 Feelin' Good by Brian Bonser

Emma - I'm doing the Dussek Allegro too. How do you find it? Can you get it up to speed yet? I can play it, but definitely not as fast as marked.

Wow you won a competition with the Dussek Allegro -I'm impressed!! I could barely scrape a grade 6 pass playing it!

I love the Brian Bonsor piece - I haven't yet taught it to any of my pupils, but it's from a really good book of his music which I use a lot especially as light background music when I'm playing in hotels for receptions, functions etc.

I like it to listen to but I cannot play it to save my life!
