Just passed my grade 4 and since I'm not going to see my teacher for a while he thought it might be a good idea to have a look at the peices and scales. I'm not rushing to do the exam straight away, I plan to do it next year but I would still like some help.

First off, scales, F Sharp Major-to me it sounds really weird and "incomplete" am I playing it wrong or is it like that?

Second-What peices should I play, I'm already working on La Tarentelle (B3) I can almost play that perfectly, just needs tidying up. I had a look at Gigue (A3), I just managed to sight read it all but I made it sound HORRIBLE With all those trills, however, I did sort of get a general idea of it.

What's the next peice (section C) I should play?

What notes are you playing?

Play some NON-EXAM pieces for a bit!

The ones I did were Rondo (A:2), La Tarantella (B:3) and Adeus, Bella Morena (C:2).

I loved them all, but my favourite was probably the Rondo. I would recommend that one if you're quite good with continuous ups and downs (quite scaley) and there are no ornaments in that piece.

La Tarantella is very nice. If you could play it up to speed, that's great, but it doesn't really matter. I didn't play it as fast as I could in the exam and I still got 27. It's really fun to just play it mega-fast, though, when you're just practicing - that's what a tarantella should sound like after all.

My C piece was also nice (highest mark -29!) and it's not that hard either; I picked it up quite quickly. However it is a bit similar to the Tarantella in sound so you might want to try another one.

And play some non-exam pieces as well! Or, you can try and learn more than 3 of the exam pieces just for experience and pick your best 3 for the actual exam.

----

F sharp major's notes are: F#, G#, A#, B, C#, D#, E# and F#. Basically it's all the black notes plus B natural and E# (same note as F).

Thanks for that, especially for the scales bit.

New Orleans Nightfal. I did that one. Wonderful piece and really fun to play!

i found that the pieces i did (Rondo, La Tarentelle and New Orleans) are actually much easier than the others in each list, the Gigue in list A is pretty difficult
