I just passed Grade 5 piano and was wondering if anyone has taken or is going to take grade 6 this year as I cant decided on the pieces.

I like Columbine Dances as I can play this allready but what about the other two?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

I did Andante Amoroso, Nuances and Columbine dances last year and passed with high distinction.
Generally all the pieces in the book are nice. However, I think with the first piece A1 (can't remember title), you would have to be really secure of the notes come the exam, because when played up to speed, it's liable to getting your fingers tangled up in the fast semi-quavers. sad.gif
The nuances piece is lovely also, but the harmonies and dissonance in the chords take a bit of getting used to. huh.gif
Colubine dances is just great! Especially the middle page! I didn't give any thought to the yellow beansleaves. Just take one look at it, and you can see why I didn't want to sight read it. However, i'm not saying it's not a nice piece, it's just not my cup of tea.
Gd luck biggrin.gif

Hi,

I'm working towards grade 6 now after a 14 year break from playing. Have you got the cd with the pieces on? I bought it and it made a real difference to my original perception of what the pieces were like - especially Shooting Stars, which is much more exciting than I first thought from limping through it at snail's pace.

From list B, I love the Tango by Albeniz, although the timing is tricky. Une Larme (not in the Selected Pieces book) seems easier and quite nice. From list A I like the sound of the Mozart - but for the triplets set against 2 quavers I feel like I need an extra brain, one to control each hand. To me it looks like the first piece in the book is technically the easiest of the three List A pieces, but as Pianoforte said, the speed makes it harder. List C I like Columbine Dances. Not that I'm at the stage where I need to choose yet, though, as I've only been back at lessons for a month!

Good luck with your choices, adamc1, and congratulations on passing grade v.

Something that you may wish to be careful about (I don't know how quickly you're planning to move between grades 5 and 6) but the current exam pieces will only be valid up to, and including, the first exam session next year (2005). The pieces for the next two years will be out on 8th July this year so, if you prefer, you could wait and learn those. Just a thought; like I said be careful with the older pieces as they won't be valid for too long (and the examiners do enjoy seeing the new books in the new year (they're valid from the first session of 2005) as they get tired of the older pieces!)

In this year,I'm going to take grade 6 this year and I will play these pieces:
list A >Andante Amoroso by Mozart
list B >B3(In english,It's named"Strange Story")by Schumann
list C >Reverie by Corea.

What's your opinion about these pieces?
