Hey,

any one listened to professional recordings of the pieces they are playing? that always helps me - listening to how pieces are 'SUPPOSED' to sound, helps me to get my pieces up to scratch.

Quite often (technically illegal i know!) I download my pieces using the internet and put them onto a CD and play along - sounds cool i know.. problem is... i don't seem to be able to download the latest grade 5 violin exam pieces - does anyone have any of them ? and if so maybe you could send me them, or tell me where you have got them from?

ok so maybe it is illegal, but i am getting them for the right reasons, not to sell and make money from, just to help for my music exam practise... so anyone got any ideas? maybe somebody has the CD and could forward the tracks to me?

Hope someone can help,

Ange

Well I don't think the moderators would be too happy if we were passing copyrighted material on their boards! No I don't have any and even if I did, I wouldn't do it because it is after all an ABRSM CD being passed on an ABRSM website. A bit stupid really.

And it's illeagal to pass copyrighted material on on the internet, even if the receiver has good intentions, correct me if I'm wrong.

Dear Ange,

I have used Wikepedia to research music I am learning in the past. To the best of my knowledge there is nothing illegal about this. Try here:

Wikipedia

and look up the composer you are interested in - you may strike lucky and find they have a sound file of the pieces you want.

Regards,

Fred

ange_the_violinist
thanks fred, i'll give it a go
Nocturne
It is not always illegal to download music. If the music is in public domain and the performing artist allows their recordings to be downloaded there is nothing illegal. I don't know about the pieces you mention, but on this website you can download (legal) music for free: Classic Cat

thanks ill try that aswell

Isn't it legal? But I thought it was... Well it's just like sharing your music stuff so it can't be illegal can it... huh.gif

WinMX itself, is of course morally and legally neutral. The problem is is that most of the users are flogging copyrighted music and DVDs to their peers.

crazy_purple_piano_freak
I read something somewhere about if you share music, you cant keep it on your pc for over a certain length of time...weird
Noodelz
People use things like Ares and download all this copyrighted material. The program itself is legal but downloading copyrighted stuff is not.

Yes it is called "sharing" but then it is illegal still.

I've never heard of anything where it is not permanent and will erase itself over a certain period of time.
Trebor
Gah, some people haven't got the sense they were born with...

Of course it's illegal. Some guy in the paper who had heard about the program off his kids was prosecuted and claimed he had no idea that it was illegal. Presumably he thought it was just this magical place where you could get stuff that you would otherwise have to pay for for free. With pretty flowers. And a stoner-rabbit. Or is that the magic roundabout?

But IF you are going to download stuff off these peer-to-peer programs (and you really really shouldn't), DON'T share any music back. At the moment, the record companies are only suing the people who share lots of it.
tzl_tzl
We will soon have a mod over here to settle stuff. As far as I know, downloading exam pieces played by the ABRSM is illegal but if you record something yourself and put it up, it is legal. I know this site which I love to use

www.music-scores.com

You need to pay if you want to download the scores or midi files but you can listen for free. Don't bother looking for exam pieces there though, there are hardly any. Its just for listening to other nice pieces.
crazy_purple_piano_freak
Is listening to stuff, but NOT downloading it, just listening on the internet illegal? Because Nostalgia Wind is the only site with a full collection of Joe Hisaishi midi and he probably knows about it, as there arent many sites dedicated to him, and its not been banned...

That should be legal. As long that isn't stored on the computer it's good.
CrazyDudette22
Well I've found out WinMX is legal, but other stuff isn't...
File sharing has enabled music fans from around the world to build the largest library of recorded music in history. File sharing is not illegal as long as you obey and comply with all relevant copyright laws. Sharing copyrighted material without the permission to do so is illegal.
that's what it says on the website so I can still download lots of music!! smile.gif

I'm not sure, are they? Oh yeah, I suppose, because you could copy a CD and then give it back to the shop (and have a guilty conscience) or copy your friend's CD....I suppose...

Nearly ALL CDs are copyrighted.

WinMX is just the software that allows peer-to-peer exchange, so it is not illegal in itself. However, there are only a few practical legal uses of it - to share an unsigned artists work, to download open-source software, to transfer personal files, etc. Any downloading of copyrighted music is technically illegal and if the record companies desired they could sue you. As it happens, they tend to only sue the people who share the music (cutting it off at the source, as it were). But ignorance of the law is not a defence, so don't start crying if they knock on your door.

You can copy a CD legally for your use providing you do it to a CDR for Audio. When you buy these blanks you pre-pay a general royalty.

You can copy anything if you pay the royalty. Helps keep the artist alive.

A lot of stores like HMV now dont refund a CD that has had the packaging taken off, because you might have copied it but they do do exchanges....

I know this is STUPID but does anyone else (like me) like buying CDs not ony for the music but for the packaging if its really cool? laugh.gif I really want to get Jack Johnson's album because the cover looks pretty...

I only ever buy vinyl albums which have far better packaging.

I can't download them from the net very easily though.

Another point, If I own a copy of an album on LP is it still illegal for me to download a copy of the same music ???

Dear Ange,

Listening to professional recordings is a good way of hearing different artists interpretation of pieces. Please do remember these interpretations will vary from one recording to another.

Ange,

From what you've written, I think that you are aware that the downloading and reproduction of copyrighted music - even if it's not to sell on - is illegal.

As many people on these forums have aspirations of becoming professional musicians, I'm sure that you can understand the injustice of this. As well as being on the wrong side of the law, you're denying the composer and the performers on these recordings the royalties that they're entitled to for their part in producing the CD. Think how you would feel if you made it as a professional musician or composer and this happened to you.

I would strongly encourage forums members not to share copyrighted sheet music or sound files.

Please note that soliciting copyrighted music via these forums is (as pointed out already) against the forums rules and will result in a warning, or, in instances of repeat offences, a complete ban from the forums.

Anybody who is interested in buying a copy of the ABRSM Violin Recordings should visit www.abrsmpublishing.co.uk

Best wishes

Christine

www.classiccat.net as far as i know only ever presents MP3 files that have been placed on the internet by the recording artist themselves. this is of course completely legal.

on sharing - NEVER EVER SHARE, this is the new way for computer hackers to gain access to your computers. you end up sharing not just music but potentially any information ever entered on your PC. chances are it's also breaching copyright laws. only download from the artist's webspace.

Maybe playing devil's advocate, but here goes. In the absence of a well-stocked music shop nearby, and inability to source the music from anywhere else if not by spending obscene amounts of money just to find pieces which then don't suit, file-sharing programmes might represent a valid alternative, try before you buy. Especially when money is tight. If the music turns out to be a valid exam choice, then that could be an investment worth considering. I think it's different for music (CDs) and contemporary artists. But sheet music by Mozart? I suspect he won't be needing the money.
Christian
Hi guys, I have a question. I actually just burned my first cd today. This summer I plan to start working on my diploma and I wanted a cd of just the pieces that will be part of my program, which of course, is impossible to buy, and must be custom made. (RCM does not offer any such cd, as the diploma level syllabus enables us to choose from hundreds of pieces and make our own program). I also wanted my teacher to have the same cd, because she has never taught my pieces before, save one. So two of my friends emailed me the 9 pieces I needed. I used itunes to burn them. After reading this, what I did was very illegal, no? So what I should have done then, is spend a couple hundred dollars and buy a whack of cds to get the one piece off each one that I need, right? But then would it still be legal for me to take those cds and make my own by taking bits and pieces from each one? I'm confused and I'm feeling guilty. To give every one the royalties and whatnot that they deserve (even though no one is still alive except maybe 2), should I go and buy the cds and stick them on the shelf? Ack, what does everyone think?
