*nods* I would be going for one of those guazy type skirts - not very long and quite see-through, so shouldn't cause a problem for the teacher and will make me feel more comfortable! That's the theory anyway.

Yes, as in the skirts that don't reach your knees you mean? Those would be good, or even the wrap over ones. A jazz skirt would be ok.
sarah-flute
Yes - sometimes they all full circle, sometimes wrap around, and finish maybe halfway down your thigh. The type of ones that are part of the uniform for a lot of ballet classes, so I assume they are ok!! smile.gif

*need to ring the teacher today...*

I ABSOLUTELY loved ballet but quite honestly, at my middle age, it's a bit too technically demanding. Now I'd very much like to take up ballroom dancing but I have a problem like the above - no partner! Hubby feels he's too tired for it but I think he's too lazy. He bought ballroom dancing DVDs instead but they don't work. They are American ones and they talk as if the listener/student is a man! Shame. Have asked him so many times now that I cannot bring myself to ask him again. Maybe I should just go without a partner??? Can I???

Further, does anyone know whether there's any ballroom dancing lessons in Woodford Green, Highams Park, Walthamstow or Chingford thereabout???

Thanks for advice.

Tess, yes, go along! You don't have to find your own partner I'm certain!

Not that good, my dance teacher gets people who have been using them, and people pick up bad habits. Heels leads all over the place etc. rolleyes.gif

THOSE places are in east London and the border of Essex. I live in Essex but only in the part that borders on east London so east London is more like it. It's where the next Forum Users (South England) Concert will be held! biggrin.gif

Stepping forwards on your heel instead of taking a pointed foot and placing ball of foot on the floor.

Any guys out there doing ballet?
There was an amazing series of programmes last year in which a principal dancer from English National Ballet taught eight dockworkers from Tyneside a ballet routine, which they then performed at work - what guts that must have taken...having seen just how much effort and stamina the work required of men who were used to doing heavy physical labour, I really have a lot of respect for ballet dancers.

Random question for the ballet folk out there - I was reading some really interesting stuff about the Gaynor Minden pointe shoes. Anyone tried them/like them/hate them? Not that I'm likely to be able to afford a pair EVER or need such a good pair of shoes to pay £70, but was just interested!

Ooh I'd forgotten about this thread - where do I start, hehehe! tongue.gif

Sarah, I didn't get on with Gaynor Mindens. They didn't offer enough support for me, I found them quite uncomfortable to wear. I couldn't do very much "intermediate" pointe work in them because they just didn't have the support to get me "up" there. Plus they had an annoying habit of slipping off my heels!

I like my nice chunky Bloch Serenades. Had em for ages and they never let me down! I know many people don't like Bloch but this style suits me very well!

I know some people who love GM's though. I think it depends on how much support you need. If you don't need much and you have nice slim feet they'll probably suit you very well - if you can afford the £70 price tag!!! smile.gif

I saw that!!! It was brilliant.
I do ballet to, started 13 years ago (aged 2) and LOVE it!!!!
I got my pointe shoes for xmas and i definately reccomend ouch pouches, they make dancing en pointe almost comfy!!! Some of the girls in my class prefer animal wool but it tends to clump together and they spend ages getting the pieces in the right places whereas I just slip my pads on and dance away!!! Or try to dance away, I'm still rather dependant on the barre to stop me falling over!!
To all you 'older' dancers out there (well, older than about 16) do you know of many dancing opurtunities for non-proffesionals? I'm probably no way good enough to get into the Royal Ballet School or similar but I dont want to stop ballet. My music teacher said she'd heard of amatuer dance companies that perform ballets to a very high standard, but are made of dancers that either didnt get into the ballet schools or started later in life (the latest you can audition for the ballet schools is 16). Any info gladly received.
p.s I'm in the UK.
