If I go to uni next year, I'm determined to go study somewhere in europe, eg Holland, Norway, Austria etc. I was wondering if anyone had any info on this subject. Like course fees, teaching languages, how the degree stands in the UK....

Any good unis you've heard of, you or anyone you know had experiences?

Help much appreciated smile.gif

Hi,

Here in the Netherlands we have the Bachelor/Master system which I thought is an international standard.

Since you have posted this in the VIVA brass forum I assume you want to study music. There are 11 places where you can study music in the Netherlands: Groningen, Enschede, Zwolle, Arnhem, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Alkmaar, Rotterdam, Den Haag (the Hague), Tilburg and Maastricht. If you go to this page: Muziekonderwijs.pagina, you can find links to most of them in the block "Conservatoria en Hoge Scholen" and most of them have an English version of the website too.

To come in any of those schools you have to do an entrance exam. This contains always an aural test and a practical test on your instrument, and sometimes also theory depending on which school you choose. The fee for the entrance test is around 35 euros. Sometimes is is possible to send a tape instead of doing a live entrance exam, but this possibility is often only for people outside Europe.

Every conservatory in the Netherlands gives lessons in Dutch, some also in English. There is more chance you can follow lessons in English in de larger city's i.e. Utrecht, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, the Hague but others might do it too.

A thing you have to be aware of when you want to study in the Netherlands is that you have to find a place to live in or near the city of your choice. The schools haven't got the possibility to board. Some schools mediate in finding housing for their students but others don't.

About the tuition fee I don't know much. I know that the official fee for Dutch people younger that 30 was 1476 euros a year, but I think the fee for foreign students I higher because the state grand doesn't apply to them. Or maybe it does if you are in the EU, I really don't know.

I hope this information is useful to you. If you have other questions feel free to ask, i'd be happy to answer them. smile.gif
