I can't find any other topics on this, so I hope this isn't repeating anything.

My Grade 8 piece Dem Anderken Petofis by Lizst has some tremolo sections in it, and I've never done anything like this before so I have a few questions.

Is it meant to be played as fast as possible or steadily (if so, at what speed)?

Should the pedal always be used during it (some of the markings are vague)?

The sections alternate between a 2-note chord and a single note. Does it have to be strictly played like that or can it be played as a 3-note sequence?

Any other tips for the piece gratefully accepted.

Thanks

I dont know this particular piece but I will try to help as best I can.
The tremolando should be played steadily and the speed is usually marked on the score, like if this two note chord followed by a single note has two lines above it play it like semiquavers (ie.like two note chord then single note then two note chord then single note in the space of a crotchet beat) or if it has three lines then like demisemiquavers. It shouldnt be played as a three note sequence but as a two note chord then single note as marked on the sheet. Thats the best way I can explain it...
hope this helps.....

biggrin.gif good job someones doing this piece

tremolandos are basically just shorthand forms of a series of alternating notes more than a tone apart, basically see how many are in the tremolando, then play it like that, and depending on the chord, use some pedal.

as for 2 notes with 1, play it like it was the above

I'm not playing this piece at the moment - and looking at it, I'm not sure ever! However, I've played a few pieces with trems in from a similar time. Not professing great knowledge of how Liszt would have wanted it, but it appears that you should play as demi-semi-quavers, evenly (steadily but quickly!).

Play the chords together at the same time and the single not alone, not a 3-note sequence.

As for pedalling. It is vague isn't it! I can't believe you'd pedal all through 2 bars and then stop half way through the next one! Try pedalling each individual beat if there's none marked, especially in the 'poco rall' bit. Tremolos can sound very untidy without the aid of a pedal.
