does anyone agree that the A3 piece(Scarlatti's sonata in D) is too easy?

It is a little bit easier than some of the other A pieces, but it does go quite fast where some of the others are slower. Its not that easy played up to speed.

Also different people find different things easier than others

Very true!
I personally don't find it massively hard, but I'm not up to speed yet. I do find other pieces incredibly difficult that friends of a similar level can breeze though.

I'm learning both this and A:1 (Allemande-Bach) at the moment and the Scarlatti is considerably easier (at least for me). The only thing I don't like is that the music suggests crossing hands for the arpeggio sections, which then makes it impossible to hold down the bass note. The CD version does hold down the bass note, and I think it sounds better, but I've learnt it the hands-crossing way now.

I experimented both ways, but I settled on not switching hands as it makes the page turn easier and encourages me and my students to practice arpeggios more!

Ah yes, the page-turn. The other bit I dislike about the piece.
I've tried, but I can't get the same fluidity if I play the arpeggios one-handed (and I also tend to splash the notes now and then). I might end up doing hte Bach instead.

I did that piece for my grade 8 - and to some extent it was easy - but then when it came to playing it at speed the difficulties began to arise! If you're good at arpeggios though and you like them, this piece is ideal! which other pieces are you looking at? I did the Arensky and the Mozart. The Mozart piece has a nasty few ornamented bars but other than that it's a lovely piece!

Then why are you doing it?
I'm doing the Mozart and the Liszt for my other pieces. Those hemidemisemiquavers around b.129 for the Mozart are a killero on the hands.

Trebor, you took the words out of my mouth. Unless you are a highly advanced grade 5 or desperately need the grade 8 for something, then if the decision to do grade 8 is a little worrying... don't!
