Is there a difference between sitting for a piano practical exam in the UK/EU, and outside the UK?
Is it harder? Are the examiners more.. 'picky' or strict?
Because I noticed, while surfing the ABRSM website, that "Exam Regulations" is divided into "UK & Ireland" and "All other countries".

Help please? smile.gif

We have the same examiners as you do. They fly out to NZ twice a year for the sole purpose of aujudicating the exams. For example the one for my next exam lives in South London usually. I think they come for 4-6 weeks. So theoretically our exams should be marked to exactly the same standard.
But then again ... sunshine, on holiday, seeing the sights, away from home stress, freedom ... laugh.gif
BUT MAYBE
homesick, staying in a horrid motel, missing their family, jet lagged mad.gif

Oh no .. which will my examiner be rolleyes.gif

I think it's divided coz it's translated into other languages?

I'll check

No it's not coz of that. I think little things like fees and exam periods will be slightly different for non EU countires

The exams should be the same standard in which ever country they are taken. Examiners should not be more picky in other countries that the UK.

The examiner is the same, regardless of which language you pick. as far as I know. Viohazard could have chosen to have a Japanese-speaking interpreter for his exam in Japan, but not a Japanese-speaking examiner.

Yes, they should be the same.
I think the two sets of regulations are simply to do with exam administration, nothing to do with the examiner or the way the exam is conducted.

There is no difference at all. The reason for the different regulations book is because some countries have fewer exam sessions than the UK and the months of exams are different too. The other difference is that in countries with fewer exam sessions the overlap of old syllabus pieces is longer than in the UK.

Im guessing you're talking just about exams held by ABRSM workers, and not including other colleges as then standards definitely do change.

A crowd that will remain unnamed (english however) examined me for grade 6 percussion this year - I've only been playing since last august and doing grade 6 was definitely pushing it as I did minimum practice last year. It turned out in there that was a whole playing technique part of the exam that I hadn't even realised existed! I came out nearly in tears, certain I'd failed - trust me, horrifiic exam. I got 88% .... Shocking, I know I didnt deserve it and to be honest Im upset that I got it, if you know what I mean. Will not be returning to that exam board.

However, Id say this one is split up to make it easier for people to find the organisers of abrsm exams in their area perhaps? smile.gif etc
