Yeah, I've read Eragon.... it's a fantasy trilogy... the second one (Eldest) was out on Tuesday or something. It's fairly good but it's not my favourite.
all ears

I read it too. I wouldn't buy the sequel in hardback, that's for sure.
My cynical take on this is that he's a talented writer who's doting book-industry Maw and Paw got him published a little before he was ready. The book has enough get up and go to keep it going, and he's got a nice set of characters on the move, but it tends to be derivative (fantasy involving dragons makes it hard to be original anyway, so I'm prepared to forgive him lots and lots), and he's not entirely comfortable with the writing style he's chosen...rightly or wrongly, I think there's an uneasy balance between a blue pencil that is being waved a bit heavily by a parent, and greenhorn lack of judgement in style...two problems that time will cure.
BUT, I'd be interested to read what he writes next. I just suggest he moves out of home before he writes the final draft! (That's assuming that my completely irresponsible analysis of the book's problems are correct!)

I got a similar impression about Eragon. I found I was remebering a lot of other fantasy novels I've read while reading it, especially Lord of the Rings, and I couldn't find it very original. But he was 13 or something when he started to write it, and Eldest might be better...
