Hi,
This is a very slight possibility but I mentioned today to my parents that I'd like to take up another instrument. Then I bought a sax CD and we were listening to it in the car and Mum said "I really like that, can you play sax?"

Anyway, the point is, what are good sax makes, what do you need to get started, what are the prices etc.

Any info would be appreciated - I know nothing about this area!

Nicki

PS - Would it be advisable not to play it - would it mess up my flute embouchure?

I think there have been discussions like this further back so you could do some searches and see. Generally good makes start at Yamaha and Yanigsawa. Selmer is more professional, VERY expensive. Yamahas probably start about £600. I would avoid Jupiter. I had one of those and it was horrible. Elkhart is another one mentioned to avoid.

I would be more concerned about embouchoure, especially if flute is your first study. Here are some threads about this issue:

I play sax and flute and I found the sax quite simple to pick up after the flute as it is similar fingering! (alto anyway!) The only problems I have is when practising, I have to practice flute and then sax and for some reason I just don't seem to be able to practise my sax first!

I haven't been playing the sax for very long but I have a Jupiter sax that my teacher recommended and I get on with it fine! I guess it's all just down to personal preference, you'll have to try a few out and see what you think!

You'd need to ask your flute teacher what she advises. If you do get the opportunity to play another instrument - go for it!

I'm sure you'll enjoy playing the sax. Sorry, I don't know much about them, except that mine sounds like a cow!

Take a look at this website: Click here

It has some useful articles about buying and testing saxophones etc.

I've just inherited some money from my Grandma and am hoping to be able to persuade my parents to let me start saxophone in the coming year. Am very excited!! biggrin.gif

I don't whether I will, because of time and expenses but I would love to be able to play it. But I wouldn't want it to mess up my flute embouchure.
Glad I made you happy though.

Hello! I had my first mini-sax lesson the other day. Unfortunately I didnt have enough hands to bring it back to London with me so wont have another go on it til christmas but I managed to get a sound out! YAY for me!
I thought it would be a good idea to learn as often you see woodwind jobs advertsed that say 'general woodwind' e.g. flute, clarinet and sax.
The fingerings are very similar which is good -just found it difficult trying not to breathe through my nose rather than through the sides of the mouth without taking teeth of reed....havent got the brain power and coordination obviously!
Seemed fun though and want to be able to play 'In the Mood' ha ha ha!!
