I take loads of subjects because three of them are short courses. Short courses are extremely annoying but it was compulsary in my school. Since it's a different subject, I tend to put in as much effort as my other subjects but it only amounts to half a GCSE, and I can't imagine how one is meant to put your short course GCSE grades onto your CV... "I've got half an A in ICT" doesn't sound so flashy.

We get forced to take them a) to fill up our timetables! and B ) because schools are forced to mee ttargets and get so many people through so many exams......
Althought the only compulsory subject to do is R.E

The rest are under governmental guidelines
I did french, german, music, history, double science, english lit, english language, Maths, GNVQ ICT and one more but can't for he life of me think what it is!

No 3 son is just about to go into Year 10. He will be taking English Lang., English Lit., Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, German, full course R.E., Drama and Music, with short course Citizenship (because he has R.E. as a full-course option). He may also get the chance to do AS Critical Thinking in Year 11 if the school continues to offer it.
When I took O levels in the 1970s I did English Lang., English Lit., Maths, Physics, Latin, French, German, History, Geography and R.E. None of this compulsory 3 sciences then, so I could do three languages instead. I wasn't allowed to take music, as I didn't own a piano.

Back in the 80s I did Maths, Physics-with-Chemistry, French, German, Latin, English Language, English Lit., Music, History and Computer Studies. The last of these was done when I was in the Lower 6th - after I'd got stroppy about being allowed to do it (a bit modern for that school at the time)
Our school didn't offer the two sciences as separate 'O' levels. And I wasn't allowed to do German 'A' level because I only got a B at 'O' level .

How ridiculous.
I took my GCSEs in '95.
I had to do Eng Lang, Eng Lit, Maths, 3 sciences (top set had to do all 3) and a combined CDT/other design subject GCSE - I did textiles with the CDT.
I chose to do French, Music and Art. Would've done German too if it weren't for stinky CDT option...
I didn't mind doing all the sciences or actually the rest of the compulsory options, but I hated having to do the CDT thing, and would really have liked to continue German.

I don't really see the point of the half GCSEs since it would look a bit stupid to write on you CV, "I have 10 1/2 GCSEs." To me (If I were an employer) it would look like they were only half the way to passing. A bit pointless to me.

Exactly!! That's why I hate doing all my short courses (RE, ICT and PE), but my school made me do them. I would much rather have done a full course for two of them and drop the other one...
purple dolphin
Aug 28 2005, 10:08 PM
RE and PE are compulsory up until the age of 16, so maybe they thought it might be worthwhile to get some sort of qualification out of it. We don't take exams in the national core subjects (excluding eng maths and sci) at our school since I think the school think that it's an unecessary pull on both the normal timetable and the exams timetable. It makes the lessons more relaxed in some ways I think, and gives us a break from our other "serious" lessons. We can however, take RE and PE full course if we want to. I have nothing against the "core" subjects being taken as short courses apart from the fact that I think it causes unecessary stress since you have to study them anyway. It's when people take a short course in French and subjects like that. Those are the ones that I think are REALLY pointless. "Wow. I have half a GCSE in French. Great"
sarah-flute
Aug 28 2005, 10:18 PM
Oh I wondered what the whole short course thing was about - so you just get half a GCSE? I thought you just had to work really hard and do the whole subject in a year. Yes, crazy...

Aug 30 2005, 01:46 PM
Short Courses are just as hard as a full GCSE, they simply have less material in the syllabus. I write my RE grade the same way on my CV as I do any other sbuject.
At my school most people only took 9 GCSE's, I only got to choose two subjects. And that was really hard when I had every teacher trying to get me to take their subjects! (Except perhaps PE!

I did music fast track and we did all the stuff in a year (only found out today that i got A* YAY!) We do 9 at school too though. I suppose really we choose 4 subjects but two of them have to be a compulsary humanity and modern language, the other 2 can be whatever you want. Neither RE nor IT is compulsary here though. Obviously we have PE lessons but they dont even do the GCSE at my school. Ive not had IT lessons since y8 as we didnt have them in y9 and i not doing the GCSE but i AM doing RE GCSE, the people who dont have to do 'general re' lessons, meaning that they learn more or less the same stuff but dont have homework and dont do an exam in it. (we get a free period while they do that!) But i dont really see the point in doing the lessons if you're not working for an exam but just working because the 'government says you have too'...

The same reason one can learn a musical instrument without taking exams - they want you to learn RE to get something out of it, not particularly to test you in what you learnt.

But if the shcools didn't timetable it then they could have criminal action taken against them. Schools have to timetable the lessons, even if not all of the lessons are spent doing RE. In our core RS lessons at school in yr 10 + 11 we watch videos and discuss the morals etc behind them. Like we watched Bend It Like Beckham in yr 9 and discussed some of the ethics behind it. They can still be classed as RS lessons, but in fact all we do is watch videos....

Ah ha! In Scotland this is called PSE and is the most pointless subject in the world as we swnt the hour doing absolutely nothing and was just a waste of time and would have been better spent on an extra subject that we could do instead of all this PSE,RE and PE stuff as if we didnt do that we could have another subject! We don't have a set citizenship lesson. Instead, our school teaches it within other subjects such as history and re. We do have to do citizenship assignments though sometimes. The one that I had to do in yr 9 was about the right to vote, and whether everyone should should be forced to vote or not. At our school we have to take one language and one dt, and we are advised to take a take a humanities, but we don't have to.

I'm soooo glad DT wasn't compulsory as it was easily my worst subject ever. I just haven't got any talent in that direction.
We had to do Maths, English Lang and Lit, Physics, Chemistry, Biology (which some people dropped to a double award Science after Year 10), I.T., a modern language, a humanity and two own choices.
