Good luck to all teachers and students who start back this week after the summer break. Hope everyone is relaxed and refreshed and ready for the challenges and trials of the coming term.

I have to go back on a FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!! Everyone probably know that by now, but it's so annoying! Why couldn't just give me an extra day off and let me go back next Monday? What's the point in starting a new term on a Friday?

Aug 28 2005, 09:43 PM
Oh, I totally know your feeling purple dolphin... we had to go in on a Friday last year and it was so annoying! What was the point?? (I suppose they wanted to give us a full week from the next week but still...) I'm starting on the 7th this year.

Everyone has the same number of days in school, so in a way Purple Dolphin, you're lucky because you'll be finished before everyone else or get a longer holiday during the year.

My mum said it may be so they get all of the new year 7s and Lower Sixth settled on the first day, and then start properly the week after. Even so, I still think it is a bit pointless. I'll probabbly wake up on Saturday and think that I have to go back to school. Gosh, after tomorrow, I won't be able to wake up on a Monday morning and think, "ooh I can have as long as I want in bed because I don't have to go to school." Aaarrgh!
noodle
Aug 28 2005, 09:53 PM
Your mum's probably right. Some schools bring in the year 7's, 10's and lower 6th early for induction days because they are either starting a new school, a GCSE course or an AS level course.

My mum really annoyed me earlier today. I woke up and found her outside sewing all the labels in my new school tie, jumper etc. I'm not going back till Friday, and all she can say is, "Oh hi Lizzie. I'd like you to sort out your school bag and put your padlock and books and stuff in it." Can't I do that on Thursday night? Why does it have to be done on a bank holiday, when I still have 3 more days of holiday left afterwards?!! I've heard of being organised, but not being sorted out 4 days before I go back to school!

Well I go back on Friday (sounds scary!) and I haven't got a clue what to take really. At 6th form you have to provide your own paper and textbooks and things and I really don't know how much stuff I'll be carrying.
flute_gurl
Aug 29 2005, 02:29 PM
I'd think just paper/notebooks, pencil case with all the essentials, a drink if you're not sure about buying one there, same for food, your timetable if you have it (I don't know if you get that before you start or on the 1st day) and anything else the 6th form has recommended you take
nicki_flute
Aug 29 2005, 02:32 PM
Thanks flute_gurl. At the moment I have a folder with paper in to take, 2 History textbooks, a pencil case. I don't know when we get our time table, but thanks for your advice.

I'm going into year 11 on September 7th. The joys of GCSE year *groan*
I still need to get new stationery and stuff like that. I have no idea whether to bring all my year 10 textbooks on the first day because they will be needed in year 11 but I'm not sure if we're expected to have them on the first day back!
purple dolphin
Aug 29 2005, 04:14 PM
I don't know about that one. Maybe take as many as you can put in your bag, and just dump them in your locker if you don't need them. Sounds like a bit of overkill, but at least you're likely to have the books of a few of your subjects.
I think that people going into GCSE years and upwards should be given their timetable on say the last day of the term before. It would make life so much easier, and I know that definitely in my school the timetabled lessons are sorted by the first week in July....

Unfortunately, I don't have a locker... just a huge bag. I don't even know where my form room is yet!

I agree! Our school definitely has the timetable ready so why couldn't they give it out?!

Aug 29 2005, 04:20 PM
Is it that your school doesn't issue lockers or that you just don't find outy which one you have until you get there? We get all lockers re-issued every year depending on where our form room is and what numbers are like. I found out about my new form room about 2/3 weeks before the end of term. Or is it just that my school tends to be super-organised? Apart from the timetables of course....

Aug 29 2005, 04:25 PM
Not everyone gets a locker... only those who have them in their form rooms. I don't know where my form room is because I have a new form tutor and was absent the last week of term because I was on a school trip to Barcelona!
purple dolphin
Aug 29 2005, 04:29 PM
Ah. Everyone in our school gets a locker, and they are all in the corridors so that you can go to them whenever you need to and not worry about disturbing lessons. My form tutor is changing this year, and our form room has moved next door. We used to have a computer room, but it was a pain because they always locked it. Now we just have a normal classroom so hopefully it will be unlocked more often from now on.

Aug 29 2005, 04:31 PM
Yes, I hated it when my form room was locked and I couldn't leave my bag in there at lunch. Science labs are the worst... had one of those in year 7!
purple dolphin
Aug 29 2005, 04:36 PM
We only get science labs if....
1) We are a really naughty form group who screw the room up
or
2) Our form tutor is a science teacher with their own room.
Luckily, I had a music teacher for 3 years (we don't change form tutor every year like some), so we got a nice form room and we had access to the music rooms whenever we wanted during form time. And when it was Christmas and we had some free periods before the big assemblies we went to the biggest music room and put a film up using the music department projector. It was like being in the cinema!

Upper 6th induction is a half day on the 8th (I don't see why, personally. It's not like I've forgotten how to use the library or the computers). Teaching starts on the 15th. Mwah ha haaaa. Enjoy going back to school early everyone!

I think I'm back on Monday. To be honest, I don't mind - this holiday has been very long and it'll be nice to have something to do, and also in VIth form I'm only doing subjects I really like so it should be easier and more fun than GCSE.
