biggrin.gif Hello All biggrin.gif

I am practising my grade4 theory and have picked up an old 2003 exam sheet. I have a question on the last exam which is as follows:- It shows a stave with no clef and a triad on the A C G assuming treble clef.
You have to write the correct clef and key signature. The key is E major. The triad is dominant.
My understanding is that if it is E major the dominant triad would start on B. If it is the relative of E major ie C sharp minor then the dominant triad would start on G.
As described above the triad that is printed on the sheet for me to add my answer starts on the A if it is treble clef.
Hope you understand my question.. I wondered if it was a typing error in the exam and should have said key is F major ...therefore the dominant note would be C which would mean the clef needed to be a bass clef....
The most likely answer is that I am an idiot and don't know what I'm talking about.

If I understand your question correctly I think the clef you are looking for is the alto clef. This is the clef that makes the middle line middle C.( In the treble clef the note would be B and in the Bass the note would be D.)
If this were the case then your 3 notes would be B Dsharp and Fsharp which is the dominant triad of E but written in the alto clef.
Grade 4 expects knowledge of the treble, bass and alto clef. Grade 5 includes the tenor clef. DO hope this makes sense.
