Full Version: Can Play... Don't Play

I've just been reading a fascinating article in the new issue of Classic FM Magazine - and if that sounds like a contradiction in terms, please bear with me! Entitled "Can Play... Don't Play", it's the story of four adults, aged from 25 to 66, who have come back to music after a long gap. All four, including The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency author Alexander McCall Smith, had given up playing years ago because of careers, family commitments or personal circumstances. Each one has now returned to playing/singing with a new-found enthusiasm which shows, as people have so often said on here, that it really is never too late.

Reading the article, I couldn't help thinking "Hey, that sounds like me!" I particularly liked the bit that said:

We can't all be a Maria Callas or a Joshua Bell but we can all learn to sing or play a musical instrument. And if life gets in the way and you put your music on hold, the ability will be there ready for the day you decide to pick it up again.

Amen to that!

That is the basis on which every one of my adult students takes lesson.

When they attend a lesson without having been able to practise because....... That is because, "Life has got in the way." It happens.

Hi woodwind,
Am I allowed to shout? If yes, then AMEN!!!

I'd love to get back to singing some day when the kids are all off to school. Currently, I have a special needs kid who needs quite a heavy commitment in terms of finance, etc. But I will definitely return to singing when I can. This Oct, I'm starting Kodaly on a Saturday when my kind hubby can babysit! Can't wait. *shudders with excitement*

Jen W,
Freudian slip? That's a good one! There's a lot of negative comments on Freud's ideas/writings on women since Masters and Johnsons's classic revelation on women but I have to say the Freudian slip is a brilliant idea that has stood the test of time. What the mind unconsciously or subconsciously thinks, it SLIPS out! Ouch! Actually, the Bible says that, too, but Freud was the first to write a book on it! biggrin.gif

Oooooooo... be careful, as the song (as modified) goes, oh, be careful little fingers what you type, tap tap! cool.gif

Totally off topic but I recall our 6th form tutor in school calling a lad into her office but mistakenly saying "Please come into my bedroom" in front of the whole tutorial group and hurriedly adding, "No, that was NOT a Freudian slip..."
