Full Version: Fairly Challenging Clarinet Repetoire?

I've found myself playing piano much more than clarinet recently, and realised it's probably down to the fact that I have barely any challenging solo repetoire, it's mostly just past exam pieces/ensembles/extremly simple stuff.

I was thinking about the Victorian Kitchen Garden Suite, but I'm not sure what range of difficulties it has; I want something that I would be able to play now as well as lasting me for a while. I passed Grade 5 (127) a couple of months ago, with it being really only the aurals that let me down, and I like a challenge, so anything Grade 6/7 would be nice to try!

Any ideas of what would be suitable? smile.gif

erm This is the stuff I like, so you might not!

Mozart clarient concerto mvt 2 (G6)-Good for tone practise!
Finzi Bagatelles 1 and 2.(G6) They're just fun! Well I spose the slow one's more tone again than fun!

Lyons Sonata for clarinet, movement 1 (G7). It's modern compared with other things, like Mozart.

Brahams sonata in F minor last movement (G7)

Lutowlaswki prelude Number 1 (I don't think I've spellt his name right!) G7. If you like just plain weird!

Poulence (I don't like it, but it's a challenege) (G7) needs lots of tone and support

Ridout concertino is grade 8, but the slow movement is quite easy and the first movement is only a bit harder than that, so it might be ok.

Any good? smile.gif

Tartini Concertino is good. Stanford 3 Intermezzi, Schumann Fantastiestuck, Gomez Lorito Caprice, and some Malcolm Arnold are good fun.

Thanks for these, I'll have a look for them on the internet when I've got some time. smile.gif

Also, has anybody played 'Tribute to Artie Shaw'? It was on the Grade 6 syllabus, and I heard it on the CD. Sounded quite difficult, but I've never seen the msuic for it...

Think I did some of the Hindemith Sonate...
Not as well known, you'd probably be better to listen to it first but I thought it was nice, I did the 1st movement. I couldnt understand it without hearing it first cos you can't predict the chord progressions without it!
Something a bit different I suppose!
