Here is a flute with a B-flat foot http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-WOOD-FLUTE-with-...1QQcmdZViewItem

Has anyone ever seen one of these before?? I had to read it twice when I saw "flute with 3 footjoints" on the page

He claims it's unique. I have never seen one before - I recall on flutenet there was a recent discussion about how to go lower than B (I think it was flutenet) and no one mentioned Bb feet - people were talking about rolling up bits of paper to make the low note lower and stuff.

I have never heard of a B-flat foot for a flute. Umm not sure about the price though...

well, i heard about rolling up paper for a different sort of joint. maybe a flute is cooler than a hookah!

must say the idea of a wooden flute appeals tho. what's special about wood? is it mellower?

Could you bend a B on a flute with a B foot to make it lower? I can do that on my flute (just) on the middle C.
Helen
Good grief! I wish I had a spare £1200 knocking about for a Bb foot! I've never seen a Bb foot joint though. Would be good to have a go though, just for the novelty value for me though! I think I'll stick with my bog standard C foot joint....

I would have thought that it would work, although with appaling tuning though...

I've heard about Bb flutes but not Bb feet (err foot).

Does the Bb foot make it a transposing instrument? Or is it just like a B foot?

I don't think a Bb foot makes it a transposing instrument. But a Bb flute is.

No seriously, if you want to get a lower note you can apparently do it that way, although obviously you can't get the other lowe note (ie C on a C foot or B on a B foot) till you remove the tube of paper. Never tried this, but apparently others have...

I've never tried to get B on my flute, will have to have a go...

You can use an empty loo roll/ kitchen roll to get a lower note on the bassoon - it's just the right size!

I have seen footjoints which go down to A and Ab.
The boston flute makers would make one for you on special request but you would be looking at the price of a flute!

The only thing with flutes that go that low is the tone and volume decrease as you go down, so it becomes a bit unnecessary.

I think at that point one might consider buying an alto flute smile.gif.

Yup an alto flute would be better for notes of that range, on the flute it gets harder to get notes around middle c and the b below.
The tonal qualities are different tho.
