I've just been set this to learn to play from memory by next monday. BUT I don't recognise any part of it and I'm finding it really hard to work out. Any idea where there's a partial recording I could listen too or something? Just to get a feel for the first 2 or 3 bars?

p.s forgot to add it's in Time pieces book 1 page 6

Try this: Vltava

There's a link on this page where you can listen to an mp3 of the whole piece. Just click on play. It's been made on a computer and the instrument sounds are rubbish, but all the notes are there and you can get a general idea of the piece. If it's in a time pieces book then you're probably playing the main theme from it, which starts about a minute into the piece, played by the strings.

Hope this might be vaguely helpful...

There's quite a lot of it - about 14 minutes IIRC! So surely not the whole thing by Monday ?!
Not having the book in front of me, I'd guess it's a main theme? rather than one of the two flute solos at the start of the piece? loved this since I was 12 btw.

It's in compound time and I think the original is in e minor - if it's the first main theme it has a rather lilting quality with alternate long and short notes. Aha - just read Rosie's reply, which is a bit more useful than mine! Good.

so did I..... I got a version that 0.00 minutes long. silence! maybe it's something to do with firewall? though why would it block a mps and not a midi? Dunno.

ok new question:

It plays a fair bit faster than I expected. I assume I need lessons on how to set my metronome? it's electronic. how do i set it for 6/8 time where a dotted crochet is 84. Obviously not at 84 the way I was trying cos that's way to slow.
sooooo if a dotted crochet is half a bar, and 84, then does that mean 84 is 2 per bar or every 3rd quaver? Or have I lost the plot totally? and if it is how do I set it to beat every quaver and get the same speed? (no I'm not gonna expect to be able to play at that speed, yet, but want to see where to aim for)

oer that lot looks a little complicated, sorry

You need to set your metronome to 84, and then play three quavers for every click.

No, not at all.
Yes, dotted crotcher 84 is two per bar, or one every third quaver.
You 'd like to see where to aim for - that's ok, multiply your 84 by 3 and that should give you your quaver speed. Warning - it will feel uncomfortably fast, and your teacher may not expect it to be up to final speed after only a few days.

You might like to set yourself a quaver speed of around 140 - 150 to start with, as a practising speed for the first day or two, then gradually build up a bit.
