brass ensemble
school wind band
and i tried to set up a jazz band with me on piano, but my trumpet player was rubbish and no one could be bothered to do it on a monday lunch time sad.gif

oh and Alibonebone, upper six is sooooooo stressful.
kenm
I play bass regularly for one orchestra, that rehearses intensively starting two weeks before its concerts. Last year I was invited to join the Reading University Sinfonia on horn but don't know what will be happening this year. Otherwise it's mainly ad hoc chamber works which I mostly play in a chamber music club to which I belong. My next performance will be of a duet for flute and horn by Sparre Olsen at the Patron's Evening of the orchestra.

Yeeess, that is a disadvantage, but you just have so much more power - half the younger kids mistake you for a teacher!
hornplayer
And the other half are still as mouthy as ever!

Seriously, best advice for you from what I'm having to go through now, make sure you read and re-read everything you get sent from all the unis and ucas. Check out places before applying to them, and when you decide where you want to go check the conditions about accomodation for your firm choice AND your insurance choice.

I didn't check the accomodation for my insurance, and I didn't make the grades for my firm offer. After results day I rushed to hand in my accomodation forms 3 months late, and I have a place to stay my the skin of my teeth. The problem is that I'm in a house that is going to be built on at Easter, so I only at present have accomodation for 2/3 of my first year. So, a warning to you, MAKE SURE YOU READ EVERYTHING!!!!

Its just that its weird going from school (where you're reminded of deadlines every five seconds) to uni (where if you don't read everything it's tough luck).

I didn't realise how many uni things there are to do; student account, ISA, online banking, buying a laptop, getting clothes together, cooking stuff, bedding, stationary, buying set works, books, headphones. All very complicated, and I supose with all the music stuff I've been doing over the spent year I haven't paid enough attention to my uni stuff.

So, if you're not off to uni, are you going to music college? Or full time work?

My school were a bit rubbish, and if you didn't want to go to uni they didn't help you figure out what you wanted to do after A levels. Grr.

Still, I'm less stressed today, and in 8 days I'll be in sunny ( tongue.gif biggrin.gif ) Brum.

I'm joining the marines! (See signature!) so yeh i think it would be very wise advice to read everything! Otherwise I will be publically *******ed and humiliated blink.gif

My (ex)horn teacher's younger son joined the Army Band on Euph. He was apparently so good that he got through the two years worth of music training in 3 weeks! He had just got his DipABRSM though. She tried to get me to join up, but I'd fail the physical side of it! I've got the lungs for it, but none of the ability to run and carry a rucksack while an army officer shouts in your ear.

How do the marines differ from the Army?

Well they have better bands and offer better training (musical and physical). They're of a higher standard and very demanding of you in every possible way! They're the best military bands at marching, and just about the best musically. Amazing.

I love Sidmouth!! I went on holiday there this summer over the bank holiday weekend. Caught the end of the Regatta and saw them boss fireworks...

I've been asked to join cottingham brass band, and they'll give me an instrument coz they're really short of cornet players, but it clashes with choir sad.gif
