I just got a cd which has the Prokofiev Sonata on it! Wow, it's so amazing! I'm blown away. I'd go and get the sheet music except it's on the FRSM syllabus... ph34r.gif ohmy.gif unsure.gif sad.gif blink.gif

You should hear the violin version too!!
saxlover
Ah just get it, it will give you a laugh!
nicki_flute
Some of the Prokokiev stuff goes like an octave higher than F3!
sarah-flute
Yeah I think some of the Prokofiev that is sometimes on the grade 8 syllabub (I think) goes beyond C3.

F4 is getting towards the absolute highest you can go on a flute huh.gif blink.gif

Gorgeous piece... Jane, do you know the flute sonata at all? Presume the violin version is just in a similar style not a transcription? I could be wrong...

Nat, believe me, I'm tempted... huh.gif wondering if anyone knows the piece as to whether I've be able to play any tiny bits of it.... it's so amazing!

Its the same piece, just a few differences for style I think. I have both on recordings, but for violin sonatas I prefer his no 1.
saxlover
Sarah- how much is it? If it isn't that much you could just get it anyway hehe biggrin.gif
andante_in_c
The first movement was on the old Grade 8 syllabus (and yes, it does go up to a top D).

It's not that impossible to play the notes, but is immensly challenging to play the whole lot. smile.gif

I remember having learnt the first movement a few years ago and being asked to play it for a piano accompaniment masterclass. I wasnt the focus of the class of course but stil, it was pretty scary because that movement is quite a beast! Howver, after I had played it through about 5 times with various accompanists, the guy taking the class thought it would be nice to just go on and look at the rest of it!!
Unfortunately for me I had BARELY looked at any of the other movements....and had to practically sight read UP TO SPEED in front of a class of people.
Oh dear....it wasnt pretty! laugh.gif

Hmmmm well maybe I could give into temptation sometime and just do a very little bit at a time! I thought that one of the movements was a former grade 8 - thanks for the clarification!

I love the Andante, but the Moderato is my favourite - that opening is just sublime, I'd like to play even that... thinking I might try and work it out sometime, need to listen again though, don't recall if the twiddly bit in the middle of that phrase comes in for the opening or now...

Dare I ask how you managed??!

Anyone who owns this piece...

Two random things...

Just flutes lists it twice

Prokofiev Sonata Op 94 BH 9 PRO010 16.50 FRSM/G8
Prokofiev Sonata Op 94 SIK 9 PRO005 18.95

The cheaper one says BH (Boosey and Hawkes?) and seems to be the "recommended edition" in terms of being listed as the AB work (always good, it's the cheaper one...!) but I wondered if anyone who has it has any recommendations, or knows what SIK stands for as I can't work it out... I've told my mum if she can't think of what to get me for Christmas, to get this!! laugh.gif well, even if I could only play bits...

Secondly... the opening phrase, I have been trying to work out, just because I think it's sublime and I'd love to be able to play it even if it's the only bit I can work out! Most of the notes are easy enough to pick up, but the twiddly bits would require sharper eyes than I possess laugh.gif anyone feel kind enough to let me know what the notes in that flourish are?

One day I'll play this thing...

sarah-flute

That was my first thought too, but I realised I know Sikorski as a helicopter. unsure.gif

It doesn't matter too much I guess... especially as the cheaper one is the one listed as the AB title! smile.gif just wondered if anyone had a recommendation.

I can play the opening (well, by ear!) bar that little flourish...
flutey toot
Afternoon sarah! Well, sightreading is a strong point of mine but still....theres sightreading and theres sightreading that piece!! Ijust had to do as best I could. It was pretty ropey though!

Just take it slowly at first. Especially that dodgy bit with the high Ds!! Really lovely first movement. Very harsh Russian!
sarah-flute
Hehehe. I'm impressed that you managed any of it. It is gorgeous... I am going to peel myself away from here soon and go listen to my CD again!

Ах! Русский язык как песня! biggrin.gif
saxlover
Have you bought it yet sarah?!
sarah-flute
No... trying to be good - you are a bad influence Natalie! *stern look*!

I can play the opening apart from the flourish-y bit - I mean literally the opening phrase - but no way are my ears sharp enough to pick those notes out.

Ooooh, unless I can somehow open the track in Audacity and slow it down...

That's possible. tongue.gif
saxlover
Me? Bad influence noooooooo biggrin.gif
sarah-flute
Jane, I just need to work out exactly HOW!

Nat: no you're right, I apologise for casting aspersions on your immaculate character... wink.gif
saxlover
Hehe!!

How much is it again?
sarah-flute
£16.50, plus postage.

Not obscenely expensive, but not exactly cheap either. That's on justflutes anyway.

At least it had 4 movements, better value for money *grin*
saxlover
Not that bad.

Just get it! Then you can stop dreaming about it!

Or if you feel bad ordering it, give me your card details and I'll order it for you...along with maybe a few other things for myself hehehehe laugh.gif rolleyes.gif

Can you copy it to your computer as an mp3? (eg using iTunes or something similar) , then you open it in audacity and use the slow down effect.

PM me if you get stuck, I think I can do it, just need to find my copy of the flute version laugh.gif
sarah-flute
Nat, I just can't afford it at the moment!

Jane, I'll go find the CD and have a play... will PM you if I get stuck!
saxlover
Oh but Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarah biggrin.gif

Get someone to buy it for you then! biggrin.gif
sarah-flute
I wish I'd thought of that idea before my birthday wink.gif

Christmas is only a few months away though...

I will actually be visiting music shops in Hereford tomorrow so you never know...
saxlover
Nooo *shakes head*

You cannot wait until Christmas!!!
sarah-flute
I think I've worked out how to do it - thanks Jane, brill idea! smile.gif
sarah-flute
Yay, I've worked it out!

Now just gotta go practice till I can play that opening... laugh.gif well, it's a start, eh?

It'll do till I get my hands on the music anyway! smile.gif
saxlover
Thats is a good start

It'll be even better when you've bought it!!!!!!! biggrin.gif laugh.gif rolleyes.gif
sarah-flute
Hehehe.

You know what was scary?

I sloed it down till you could hear the beats of his vibrato, and the flourishy bit was still (at a guess) semiquavers at say 60 bpm, or something... I mean, not fast, but when I'd slowed it down THAT much...?!
saxlover
Cool biggrin.gif
