How do I go about finding an aural teacher?

Hi nicki flute
Have you tried looking at the lists of teachers held by the ISM? Generally speaking piano teachers are used to teaching aural and so you might want to look them up in the directory. The website is www.ism.org The directories are generally held in good libraries. EPTA also have lists of teachers in various areas. I don't think anyone JUST teaches aural as really it is an ongoing part of learning an instrument. Good luck

What on earth do you want one of them for?! tongue.gif

I found someone to give me a few crash course lessons in it, not that it helped much...

Can your flute or music teachers in school recommend anyone? Most of the students who come to me for help with Aural tests have been sent by their practical tutors. Is this Trinity or Associated Board? The Trinity ones are hideously difficult, perhaps you could try the optional musical awareness tests instead. Perhaps a local piano teacher could help?

I think I'll be doing AB. The thing is, I usually have my piano teacher, but recently, he annoys me. For instance, my friend did Gr 5 theory from no knowledge to Grade 5 level in 3 months and got a merit - 82. However, to him that wasn't good enough. Although he nice, he always goes on what I could have done better.

oh my god thats amazing on two accounts
one that you got a merit in 3 months (i would have been happy with a scraped pass)
and two that he only concentrated on what could be better

Yes, like I got 91 and went from Grade 3-5 in 6 months. I was like 82 is so good for someone in 3 months from knowing no theory. GRR. Also, he doesn't like my AS subject choices because they aren't "proper" like Maths and Science. He can be really nice, but SO critical.

If you can't get anyone in the locality, try using aural training CDs. I've never used them with my pupils, but I know that some have been helped by them.

When are you planning to do your exam? Next Spring or Summer? If that's the case you've got enough time to be really confident at them without the stress! What's your flute teacher doing about it anyway? Do you do aural regularly with him/her?

I don't know when I am doing my Grade 8, but I want to be prepared. I have tried the aural CDs but many don't have answers. My flute teacher usually did some aural about 4 or 5 times before the exma but not that much.

The last time I entered a Grade 8 student (ABRSM), two terms ago, she was worried about aurals and I suggested she took a few singing lessons with a good teacher. She did this and it gave her a lot of confidence, and as the teacher was excellent she prepared her for most of the aurals. This saved time for more practical tutoring in our piano lessons and it all worked out very well. smile.gif

Surely the instrument teacher should be the one to provide aural training for any grade exam? My student who is working on grade 6 would think it a bit odd if she had to go somewhere else for help with this. She's just started learning the grade 6 repertoire, and we've already done a sort of pretend aural test to see what she needs to brush up on.

Ask your flute teacher to gen up! She must have done it herself at some point, and even if she didn't take grade 8 she should be able to figure out the aural tests and help you with them, surely.

Yes, she does give me aural help in lessons, but I haven't got a fixed date for when I'll do Gr. 8 but I'd like to brush up on it before I start having to practice scales and pieces.
saxlover
That mean you don't practice scales and pieces already?! ohmy.gif tongue.gif laugh.gif

You're so not!! If I can pass them anyone can!!!!!!

I don't know 100% what my board is yet, don't know when I'll do it and what pieces I'd do.
