P.S. How much does the Diploma cost? Isn't it over £100? I dont know if I can afford that kind of cost. I'm only a poor teacher after all.

It cost me, if I recall, £105 for my DipABRSM last December. The LRSM is in the high £200s and FRSM coming up to £500.

Ick.
Keeping it in perspective: it's still cheaper than the fees for the equivalent level university modules; for example, the FRSM (equivalent to a postgraduate performance module) is less than half the price one would pay for a postgraduate music module from the OU, say.

The Dip is a reasonable amount if compared to other boards, I can't understand why the jump is so much to LRSM though.. at least for FRSM they have to mark/consider your 5000 word dissertation before the exam. In terms of written work, LRSM is not that much difference to the Dip... Perhaps the fees are set at a level to dissuade ill-considered (repeated) attempts at the diplomas?
Either that, or you're paying for the inefficiencies of the ABRSM diploma system (re: multiple threads on the amount of time it takes for the results to come out...)
I always thought £500 for FRSM was very steep, but since I'm starting the OU MA in Music in January, it's relatively cheap cuz passing it means I can skip the third year MA dissertation (cost: £1060)

My thoughts too. Looking at the content of the two non-dissertation modules, they look like they'll be a godsend when writing the FRSM written submission and in the viva - my plan, as perhaps you're doing, is to do those then take the FRSM. Should I then pass, I'd get my FRSM and MA at the same time.
Oh, I forgot to say, Barcarolle - well done

Not this January as I'd have to seek special permission to do so as I'm enrolled full time at another further education institution (writing up PhD, don't think I'd have much time anyway

). The following year, I may well still be enrolled full time in another futher education institution. The year after

Do we know that they're all out this week. or does it depend on when you did it? I did mine on July 27th, so when do you think I might get mine? I fear the news will be bad but it'd be good to know one way or the other and get it over and done with!

I had a phone-call last night from one of my pupils who did a retake of part of the Dip in the summer - she passed this time, so we're very pleased

. All the more so, actually, as she ALMOST didn't bother taking it again after her disappointment the first time round! That was a really nice piece of news for her just before she goes off to uni (to do music there).

Thanks for all your congratulations! Breakdown and brief summary of comments:
Programme Notes - carefully prepared mostly well informed, one incorrect statement.
Viva - enthuiastic approach, thoughtfully prepared, fluent responses often from personal experience, broad grasp of issues in prog notes. Score 15/25
Quick Study - didn't flow easily, serious attempt and despite slips convincing overall. 7/15
Bach P&F F# minor - clear & well shaped prelude, fugue - pleasing simplicity, more shaping of dynamics required, greater clarity in part playing
Beethoven Sonata in c Minor Op 10 - musical perf, many effective moments, captured much of the drama in 1st movt, 2nd movt needed greater rhythmic precision, some good cantabile playing, 3rd movt mostly confident & capable, some unsettled moments, overall committed performance
Faure Barcarolleno. 6 - some lovely moments, needed to capture 6/8 feeling before adding rubato, some pedal changes too frequent, more observation of dynamics needed, carefully prepared, flowed, good colour range. Score 35/60
So there you go - hope that is of some interest / use Gae

I'll be coming to you for advice once I venture down the teaching diploma route. Have to get this performance LRSM out of the way first. I've promised myself,
no more diversions. I've taken Grades 5 and 7 on piano, 6 in theory and 8 on recorder since starting to work for it. All good reasons for not entering the LRSM.

Well. it still might be this term. I have a few days to decide. If not, it will be next July.
I've just had a fantastic final lesson with my brilliant Oxford student. She's been sent the Doppler Andante and Rondo to work on by another flautist who wants to play it in a college concert, so I ordered it myself so we could work on it with both flute parts. I've fallen in love with it, and I'm thinking, 'How about the chamber ensemble option for the LRSM so I can play it?' It opens up all sorts of new possibilities.
Is this another diversion, I ask myself?
Jo, I forgot to say well done to you and your student.

Well, only the Mozart D major would be legal (I think, can't remember when Roussel died). The orchestral parts are up on the site YAP got the trio from, though, so if we can find two oboes, two bassoons (or is it 1?) and a lot of strings...
My teacher phoned just now to rearrange a lesson. He said he would do the Doppler with me if I wanted to do the chamber option.

I said I thought he might show me up a bit.

But I've decided to wait until July so we can explore the possibilities. At least it's a positive decision for deferring this time. I'm always really tired by the end of the autumn term as well, so I think summer would be better for that reason.
sarah-flute
Sep 15 2005, 06:48 PM
That's good, the make a decision rather than defer by default (if you see what i mean!)
You could just record some of the Mozart slow movement or something? Maybe with chamber orchestra backing? I'm sure YAP could perform some editing magic and make one viola sound like several for instance. Anyway no pressure but if you fancy it *grin*
Look forward to hearing all about it when you decide exactly what you are doing

Easily do-able: if you record the viola track a couple of times, I can play them back together plus offset by a couple of milliseconds. It sounds quite convincing.

Sep 15 2005, 07:27 PM
lol, there you go!
how about one recording offset? a really together and efficient section... but I guess it's better if there are several subtly different variations... (and no one would find a really together viola section convincing...)

Well I was tempted to put 'two bars apart' earlier but I settled for a few milliseconds

It's not just the diploma prices. The graded ones are also one of a kind. I sat for my Grade 8 in June 14th and expecting results late september/early october. The problem is that I pay the same price as my friend who sat for Grade8 during August 5th(about 2 months later) and WE WILL BE GETTING OUR RESULTS THE SAME TIME. This shows that it's either my country or *youknowwhat* that is trying to save money and send the results to London for checking at the same time after all the exams in my country are done with.
Anyway, congrats to all Diploma candidates. Good job!

Aaah finally got my results this morning - I was interrupted in the middle of teaching my grade 1 pupil to find a big brown envelope saying 'certificate' on it. Relief! Had to abandon lesson momentarily to find out marks. Pulled out nice shiny certificate only for Dad to point out that it said 'with Distinction' at the bottom! Am so overwhelmed - I remember saying to my teacher back in July that I'd never get a distinction. And I was convinced I'd failed the Quick Study, only to find I got 12/15! Here are my mark breakdowns:
Recital 39/60 (high pass) 'Overall this was very capable and intelligent playing.' I especially like the comment about my Schubert slow movement, 'there were some touching moments'.
Viva voce/prog notes 22/25 (distinction) 'Notes very well written combining analysis with informative historical background. viva confirmed this impression. A wide range of knowledge was intelligently communicated and all questions were thoughtfully and intelligently answered'.
Quick Study 12/15 (distinction) 'This was well grasped. Tempo changes and changes of key were well observed and this was fluently played with very few errors'. (v. surprised at this as I thought I made lots of errors!)
Overall = 73%
Congratulations to all who passed, don't give up those who didn't this time round. My advice would be to get as much public performance experience as possible, competitions, trial-run recitals, masterclasses.
Found it alarming that in the letter from ABRSM sent with the mark sheet it said about now being able to enter for LRSM 'in due course'!

I got my results today too, and I passed! Hehe, I am so excited as I was convinced that I'd failed. I had to go to school to get the results which was a bit odd as I left last term!
I scraped the Viva getting the pass mark, but since to one question I said outright 'I don't know', after much deliberation. I guess it was the fact that there was 'much sincerity in my approach' that swung it for me!!
Overall I got 49%, not quite as good as Hannah, but who cares? I'm thrilled. If anyone els is going to take DipABRSM in clarinet then I can answer any questions you've got and try and give you some advice.
