Does anyone know of a teacher of this in N Gloucestershire (near Moreton-in-Marsh) for a friend of ours?
She's an adult beginner - but can play the piano and read music.

HI - useful to know about this - thanks. But drew a blank for the double-bass. Found one in Gloucestershire, Virginia, USA, but was hoping to find one closer than that.
Anyone know of other teachers or other resources?

I know that at least one child I knew as a youngster had Double Bass lessons (I'm in GLOUCS by the way) but I don't know where offhand. Have you tried ringing the music service at Colwell Arts Centre? They may have some ideas.
Also, ask around local strings/specifically cello teachers, who may have links.

You might try contacting Beauchamp House (01452) 750253 as at one time they certainly taught double bass there. They may be able to put you in touch with someone.

I think Beauchamp house has been sold recently. The Lumsdens have long since moved on.
It may be worth contacting BMG
http://www.beauchampmusicgroup.co.uk/ or GAMPA GAMPA (Gloucester Academy of Music and Performing Arts)
http://www.beauchampmusicgroup.co.uk/gampa/ though.
Hmm, I just checked and contact info on both sites is really out of date, but the GAMPA email address may work.

My brother (just passed his Grade 8 in Double Bass) has a very good teacher in Newport, Gwent. Would that be too far for your friend to travel? This teacher is a professional double bassist who plays with the BBC Welsh Symphony and has really done wonders for my brother. Plus she's a very nice person and very easy to get on with. If you're interested I could PM you her number.

There's a UK-published monthly magazine called "Bassist" from the same stable as "The Strad". If your friend can get hold of a copy, I'd say it would throw up a few leads either directly, or via luthiers in the area who obviously would know players. Here's their web site:

I know that two young lads in a school in Cheltenham (on the Gloucester Road) learn the double bass, so presumably they must have a teacher. Can give more details if that is helpful. (Only I went to their concert earliet in the year)

Could try contacting the Musicians Union. Apart from playing, a lot of the members teach privately as well.

Hi all,
Thanks for the tips. I think (not sure) that my friend followed a lead I gave her yesterday. But I might come back and ask for more details all!
Thanks heaps
Mark
