hiya, if u listen to whitney houston songs, u will notice that she "growls" some of the words. U can hear this on "So emotional" and the line near to the end when she sings "its shocking wha-at, LOVE can DO", the capital words are the "growled" words.
Can anybody do this, or know how to do it? (thats not the only song she does it in btw, its the only sog i can think of at the mo)

Quite honestly, I've seldom listened to Whitney Houston, and don't recall anything particular about the way she sings. I don't like her voice that much.
Possibly this sound comes from pushing the voice too hard when belting. But if that's how it happens, "growling" sounds like a really bad idea, and likely to do harm to your throat if you try it.
Sorry and all that.
Cheers

I don't understand how belters make that sound at all. How they sing such high notes without using their head voice! It baffles me!

i dont understand belting eaither- im so bad
the "growling" might just be the mix of verbrato and belting

Amplification? They don't sing loud compared with an opera singer at full blast but once passed through effects units, exciters, reverbs, voices can be made to sound far bigger than they are.
I don't particularly like her singing but she has assets of various kinds as a good entertainer. She's gone down well with the public.

Hiya. I would just like to revive this post because i cannot belive that NO-ONE knows about this "singing technique". Is it called the glottal attack? or The Grunt?
If you listen to this song (follow the link) and liisten to the bits where she goes "say you love me , i know ya love me, i know ya do" or something. U can hear it on the bit where she tilts her head back and makes a strange shape with her mouth and says (OH wake me. Im shaking) She "growls" on the "OH".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC18NLPkW8M...itney%20houston...You can also hear this "growling technique" which i am looking for the name of, on Dina Carroll's "i dont wanna talk about it"

I'm afraid I've never come across this technique. Personally, I can't see why anyone would want to use it really - it sounds painful!
