In this year,I'm going to take grade 6 Piano and decided to choose these pieces:
list A >Andante Amoroso by Mozart
list B >B3(I forgot it......)by Schumann
list C >Reverie by Corea

So,what's your opinion about these pieces?
bruno
hi ahtham,
like you I have chosen the Mozart . It is very beautifull but difficult technically and long. My list B piece is the Debussy "page d'Album" , very romantic and pretty , the notes are not difficult but for some reason I find tricky to put it together. For the list C I am playing the Martinu "Columbine Dances", it is very smooth , not too tricky to learn , only some left hand cord jumps in the middle section .
I don't know about you but I find that there is a big jump in difficulties from grade 5 to 6.

Hi Bruno

As I said on the post Adult Beginners (and thanks for your nice comments), I scraped Grade 6 and agree with you that there is a big jump between 5 and 6. Grades 6, 7 and 8 are advanced. The criteria by which they judge the pieces are far more exacting than at the previous grades and they are looking for individual expression and interpretation and flair and take technical security for granted. It has something also to do with the fact that the bridge between 5 and 6 has sorted out the sheep from the goats with the theory barrier out of the way. Many fall by the wayside at 5. Those that go on are those that have grade 8 in sight. In fact if you look at the article "These Piano Eaxams" it says there that the criteria is different. It is not enough just to play the pieces technically well. They have got to be really highly polished. In retrospect I was not ready and could/should have done with an extra month. ( I injured my left arm a month before the exam, could not play for 3 weeks and was in 2 minds whether or not to pull out at the last minute, but decided to risk it, determined not to let it be an excuse!) My feeling of unreadiness showed itself in a lack of confidence. And lack of confidence equals NERVES! As someone else has said on a different topic, aim at having the pieces at distinction level, play them a lot to others, tape yourself and play them back listening critically. Keep that pulse going in the Mozart, keep the humour and dance rhythm going in the Martinu and keep it crisp. Practise those scales over and over again. And again!

Good luck.

I did Grade 6 piano last year. Passed with merit(120). I know its not that good, I should have done better in scales and my 2nd piece. I choosed B3 too. I did it badly.I only got 19/30 for it. I should have chosen the tango which seems much better. I choosed A1, B3 and C2. I love the columbine dances, I got 28/30 for that. smile.gif

These are my results:
Scales:16
A1:26
B3:19
C2:28
Sight reading:15(I can never do it properly)
Aural: 16
I have advice for C2. In the 2nd page, you have to get faster[poco vivo](don't ruch too much, just play a little faster), then you slow down. At the last 2 staves, you have to do the poco vivo again. Finally at the 3rd page, you go back to the original(1st page). I hope that helps! Relax while playing this piece, its suppose to be a dance.
