Beethoven
What's your favourite piece to play on the clarinet? And what would you like to be able to play on the clarinet?
another crazy pianist
Well I'm not a clarinettist, but since nobody replies (so far), I'll do:
Mozart's concerto K622, as well as his quintet for clarinet and strings K581 !

I like playing

Mozart's Clarinet Concerto
Paul Reade's Victorian Kitchen Garden Suite
Tartini Concertino
Gomez - Lorito Caprice

I cannot play them perfectly by any means but they are all fun to play

There are loads more but I'm too lazy to type!

It's your lack of energy, isn't it ? rolleyes.gif

Poulenc sonata
I suppose I quite like the Lutoslawski dance preludes they're quite fun!

Oh dear I have a bit of a 20th Century theme going on here don't I! laugh.gif

I also adore the whole of the Mozart, and the Arnold Sonatina. But I think my favourite piece is the Burgmuller Duo.
neil.clarinet
Mozart Concerto, Weber 1 and Grand Duo, Solo De Concours by Messager, Premiere Rhapsody by Debussy, Copland Concerto, and many more. Now looking at Lorito Caprice.

Not a clarinet player, but Kodaly's Dances from Galanta would have to come pretty high up the list.

It's a set of folk-tune inspired dances for orchestra written by Kodaly. The clarinet plays a major role throughout: bars 31 to 65 appear on the FRSM 'Orchestra Excerpts' section for Clarinet, for instance. Unfortunately, I can't get you a free link to listen to off the Internet as it doesn't start in the first 60 seconds rolleyes.gif. However, if you want to listen to the first 60 seconds which doesn't have the clarinet part in it, head over to Amazon.

When you start at Bangor, find out whether the university has a subscription to the Naxos Music Library, they almost certainly will. The library will probably be in charge of it. If they are, get a username and password from them - you can then listen to any Naxos CD ever recorded over the Internet for nothing. Which is pretty much everything ever apart from some of the more modern repertoire, which they haven't quite got round to yet.

I don't think I'd ever heard it before, but at a concert a few weeks ago where they play Proms-type stuff in the 2nd half, they did the Sea Songs that are played on the Last Night (the one where the prommers usually have a starring role with hooters in the hornpipe) and in one section of it there was THE most incredible Cadenza-ish section for the clarinet, all dimished 7ths and stuff up and down and zooming all around.

I wish i could be more specific - I've NEVER heard that bit before, i'm certain - but it was FANTASTIC!

I've just printed off Mozart's Clarinet Concerto (2nd movement) from music-scores.com, and it's amazing: it's probably the best piece of clarinet music I've got now!

That demisemiquaver grace note run spanning almost 3 octaves in bar 59 though...eek!

Yeah, I just look at it and get something else!

Ugh, i really hate the bagatells. My teacher made me play the first one and i hated it so much!... they just sit in my music case now.

Love the mozart though, i just started properly learning it, and i love it... i reall love the part which starts on a bottom G and is just a few bars with tonnes of notes all in right hand. (sorry, i dont have music here with me to tell you bar numbers) I played it in an echoey room and it is just amazing (also, i played it on an amazing clarinet which i was just trying out - im getting a new one you see!)
saxlover
Prelude is the first one isn't it, I don't mind that. The only Bagatelle I don't like is Fughetta!! Yuck!
Kate
I just can't seem to be able to play Finzi. It doesn't matter which one, I suppose it must be some kind of mental block but I'm just rubbish at it!
another crazy pianist
The sweetest romantic clarinet music I ever heard is the opening passage in the third movement of Rachmaninov's second symphony, the orchestra softly whirling around a tender clarinet melody...
Every clarinet-lover should hear this !
Bb Clarinet
i'd quite like to be able to play premiere rhapsodie by debussy.

(neil.clarinet - i can play solo de concours!!!!)
