Is it just me, or does anybody else's life revolve around music? For example, I'm in 2 orchestras, a ceidligh band, a rock band, a pop band, gospel choir, steel drum band, operatic society, county choir, I do Piano flute and singing lessons, AS music, and play other instruments, just for fun. Most of my money goes on music too.I love it, don't get me wrong, and I do go out, shopping, cinema, discos, park, like a normal teenager, but doesn't it feel sometimes that music is everything?
I like it that way!

glad to see I'm not the only person who seems to be totally obsessed with music! I'm in 9 (yes- NINE!) orchestras, two bands, three choirs, two traditional irish groups, a brass quintet, a wind quintet and I'm doing AS Music in my spare time (no classes) as well as four other AS subjects, Grade Eight theory, Grade 6 Piano and Dip.ABRSM Horn in June! I'm struggling a bit now, but I can't bear to give anything up!

Im the same
I have loads of bands and stuff that i am in, but i still go to guides and do other sports as well. Some people can be really mean if you tell them how much music you do. Many of them do actually think that you have an obsession which is really annoying.

yes music is everything, but most people don't see it that way (at least for me).
in school, i'm mostly invovled in extracurriculars (youth empowerment, editor of a zine, literacy promotion, Forensics - public speech and debate, badminton, track and field, community involvement, Science Club, health awareness relations, Close-Up - government studies, Mural Club, etc.). i don't involve myself with the school band that much because there's a limit that you can't be in Forensics and Band. otherwise, i'd be in the Jazz Ensemble. but, anyway, i do competitions, exams, used to do teaching, and yes music is an obsession because i spend way too much money and time focused on this aspect of my life.
and anyways, who wants to be normal?
the image of the typical teenager is not who i want to be.

I know! I hate being called obsessive for being passionate about music when it is a passion!
I write loads of songs too.I just arranged a talent show at my school and came 3rd with a song i wrote, and performed. It was so cool. Also i hang round with people younger than me, like 13 and 14 who are also musicians, and we are all really close with my music teacher, me especially, and people get on at you for being cliquey! I hate narrow minded people!

i think we are all obssessed with music for one one reason.....
we enjoy it!! ( and the fact that where there is a concert there is usually beer!! hooray!!)
anybody else have an obssession with beer aswell as music? or is it just us brass players?!!lol
no, i think, as i've mentioned many times before it's cos you can't beat a good group of lively, paraletic, raving musicians. it's great!! we all enjoy wht we do and each others company!!

lol Nat- Im really struggling at the moment! Luckily only four of my orchestras meet weekly, the rest are national&provincial things that only meet up for residential courses, and there'a couple I'm in that I only go to the week before a concert and then play in the concert! (certainly good for sight-reading!) Lots of that is school stuff too, which just means coming in extra early most mornings and staying late most afternoons- but I love it all so much!! I just wish I could do music and nothing else!!
jaime- beer is good, but you can't beat a nice pint of guinness! (which is stout in case anyone doesn't know!)
I think musicians are the most fin people to be around, and when you know someone is musical you can immediately be friends with them, which is great!!

oh yeah- i meant to say musicians were the most 'fun' not 'fin' lol!

Oh dear, I'm feeling bad again.
I play just the flute, listen to a fair bit of music, and am in one orchestra.
and that's as far as the 'obsession' goes.
I think this is probably because I'm better at so many other things, for example (and I don't mean to boast here) I'm predicted a's or a* s in all my GCSE's this year, and my main passion is reading, which leads onto my next one of writing.
So I guess I'm not the 'typical' teenager, but I'm not the 'typical' v. musical teenager either.
So what does that make me???

When do you have time to eat, sleep, do your homework and revise???? Not to mention practice for your instrument???

I know what you all mean...and agree with you that it does drive your other (un-musicalish) friends round the bend!
I think i'm in five different bands at the moment....I sorta lost count! The worst problem I found with music, music, music, is that coz I play euphonium and trombone i get large amounts of guilt trip from parents for taking me everywhere with my stupidly big instruments!
(and then I play the piano as well and always suggest that investing in a grand piano and knocking a wall down in the house to make room would be a good idea)

I eat when I can - mostly on the go or not at all . . . I seem to be losing my appetite. Sleep - as with any teenager, it's a necessity that I don't get enough of. Generally, I do homework and such through late nights and early mornings . . . practice for instrument is two hours after I get back from school, work, and such and two hours before school starts . . . yah, I manage, but as you can see, it's crazy.

Well, while both are supposedly irish traditional, one is more 'purist' than the other one. Basically we have:
irish flutes (wooden, not keys),
tin whistles (or penny whistles or whatever you want to call them!)
uillean pipes (uillean means elbow in irish- they're like bag pipes except you don't blow into the bellows, you pump the air with your elbow. The sound is much more beautiful and haunting, they're just the most gorgeous instrument when played well)
fiddles (violins, but different playing technique)
guitars (tuned differently to normal)
harp (irish harp, smaller than concert harp)
bodhran (a drum held on its side, you can play it with a stick or with your hand)
you can also have lots of other instruments that aren't strictly irish like mandolin, bouzouki, accordion and concertina

Oh lord, I feel so un-obsessive now.
I play in one string quartet and thats it. But, I've been looking into orchestras in my area as I can't really travel far for rehursals. Sadly, my school hasn't got an orchestra I don't think, just a big band thing, which I haven't really looked into, they're just brass instruments aren't they?

Well, im one of those people that can't bear not to be part of everything!!!
At the moment im in 3 orchestras, chamber group, weekly choir, county choir, national choir, countless clubs at school, personal mentor, rehearsing for end of year show, as well as teaching piano twice a week, my own piano, violin, singing and drum lessons, and own personal practice. There's also school work and church, so its all a bit hectic, but to be honest, i cant stand not being busy. school holidays are a nightmare!!! how swotty do i sound?
I think i am slightly obbessed with music though, yes!!!

Hello Hgirl,
I'm irish too! I'm not in any irish trad groups though. I have a friend who plays the harp, the piano and irish singing, and she once told me a story of a friend of hers that was going to classical piano lessons and couldn't get out of the habit of tapping his feet wildly! (haon, do, tri, ceathar!)
What instrument do you play? I play Piano and Clarinet. I'm mostly into Classical and Jazz, not so much trad, but I like it too.
Hey, I have an idea, let us use irish colloquialliims and see what the others here think of it. Here goes.
What's the craic? Shure, Oi'm grand altogether. Aah feck. Me oul man says, dat he seen de best ting since sliced pan. Aah feck.
That is all that I can think of right now. Oh well. Oi'm shure me oul man will tink o' sometin'.
