Hi there!
I'm currently learning the CPE Bach for list A... and I don't really like it - at all! It's a bit soul destroying trying to play musically something you don't even like!
I'm going to keep playing it - seems a shame to waste the work i have already put in - but does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives?
I've tried the Leclair, which was OK but didn't grab me. Have had a bumble through the JS Bach and I think also the Handel at some point.
The CPE was my teacher's recommendation, so I'm not going to just drop it, but I am going to talk to her about trying an alternative or two, and I'd like to go armed with suggestions rather than just "I don't like it <whine whine>"
Any help would be MUCH appreciated!
I'm doing the Gaubert for list B and the Stokes for the study, so a contrast would be good!

This isn't very helpful, but after listening to the piece on CD, I agree with you! I don't like it either. I didn't do ABRSM Gr 6 so I can't help you that much, but I'll have a look at the syllabus later on.

Hi all!
Just popping in on dial-up, won't be staying.
I like the Bach (JS) the Handel and the Hummel from list A. The main drawback to the Hummel is the cost of the music, but it's a lovely classical rondo and you get to rest a lot while the piano does its stuff. You have to be good at counting, though.
If you've got a Naxos subscription, the Hummel Flute Sonatas are on one of their CDs. You can listen to the first 30 seconds for free, even if you haven't got a subscription.

I did the Telemann D Minor from list A, and I liked it. That might be worth look at. It's also a grade 8 recorder piece.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. (keep them coming, anyone else who's reading this...

)
Very annoying that I no longer have a local music shop!
Ho hum...
Thanks for the tip about the Naxos recording, Andante.

Is the Hummel the one that Thomxxx has put up as a recording on YAP's site?

No, well it doesn't match my music!

Darn - that would've been a good help to deciding if I liked it!

I have to be honest and say that I missed out Grade 6, however, I found in all the grades that the list A pieces are always the most boring - none of them ever grabbed me!

I already missed out grade 5 because I was uninspired by the music available! I think missing out grade 6 as well may be being a little ambitious.
I love *some* of the list A pieces - the Bach that I did for grade 4 was lovely.

Just to say thanks everyone for your thoughts... I'm doing the JS Bach. My teacher hadn't realised it was only the Siciliano, she thought you had to do the allegro as well which was why she hadn't thought to recommend it. (I have checked the syllabus about 3 times since I got home to be sure that is right *grins*) I can play it better and like it more after 24 hours than the other one after a couple of months of on and off practice, which is a good sign! (plus I didn't have to buy any more music, which is good for my bank balance....!)
Thanks for your help!

It isn't very inspiring, is it?
I'm sure beavering away at all those triplet runs and stuff did me good, but I'm glad to leave it now!

Hi! My exam is in november and I'm doing the Handel for list A. The only down side is that there are two contrasting movements to learn.

I should look at the Handel, I don't think I even got round to working out which movements it was, I don't remember...

It's my favourite Handel Sonata. Movements 1 and 4: Larghetto and Allegro.

Well, that's what I call a recommendation... I need to play SOME flute before it gets too late and stop wasting time on here... I'll call that impertus to go do a little flute practice...
