Full Version: Grade 3 Two Weeks Ago

Laura7112
Hi all,
I started learning piano in October, and have just taken my grade 3 about 2 weeks ago (results should come soon right?)

Thing is, i was completely prepared for it, my teacher said i would pass no problem, even suggested grade 4 instead. But once i got in the exam i totally panicked. It didn't go terribly, but it also didnt go how i wanted it to go!

i made a slight mistake in my first piece, A1, and i stumbed a bit on a decending scale-like seciton of my second, B3 i think it was. C3 was fine although it was my worst to start with. Scales etc were good except one small error, aural ok except a couple of notes and wasnt sure about the tonality of a piece.

Could i still have passed? Thing is, the piano was a realyl old unresponsive grand, and it felt awful, no emotion or anything, so it was hard to tell. also, i havent taken a piano exam before so i have nothing to compare this one too.......

Hi laura

from what you have said i think you will have passed so dont panic!!most of us feel like we dont perform our best in exams because we panic and get nervous!!

to be at grade 3 already is really good, do you play any other instruments?!

you should get your results any time now so let us know!!im sure you will have passed!!!

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I am the type of person that always worries etc with exams, my hands were shaking so bad - which doesn't really help when playing piano!!

Well I played clarinet for about 4 months when i was 10, but gave it up cos we got a dog and she was more fun to play with. I tried learning flute last year, teaching myself because my sister has a flute - only i have a lung condition so i couldn't do very well with the playing and breathing thing!!
I also bought a guitar a week ago, which is cool but a bit awkard to play, not as nice as piano but different.

I might be taking my grade 5 in the next set of exams, do you know when the entry closing date is, and are the exams June/July time? I really like the Jazzy piece from the gr5 book, and the A3 piece is cool too but the B pieces are a bit pants!

I should get my results now ish i think, but they will go to teacher - i didnt have a lesson this week as her mum is in hospital and probably wont survive the week; so dont know if i'll have a lesson for a few weeks.

Closing date for summer exams is 30th April.
saxlover
yeah the next set of exams are in June/July. I think the closing date is 30th April for posal entries, so if you are planning on doing an exam in the next session you best get entered quick!!!

where abouts do you live and how old are you?!! you should start the clarinet again its great!!! biggrin.gif

Laura7112
lol yeah iwish i'd carried on clarinet, i dropped it and my friend took my space - she did up to grade6.

yeah thats the thing i really want to enter because i like to keep motivated, and i figure gr5 for summer will give me a pretty good motivation, also if i do the gr5 theory maybe, because i only have til xmas as i go on a gap year to S Africa in january, want to do as much as poss.
So what you play then, clarinet and piano obviously, anything else?

I'm 17, and im from north east UK.

Laura
saxlover
if you are going to do grade 5 piano in the summer you must be a very quick learner!!! or have you already been playing the pieces?!! im doing grade 5 piano in November and the scales are horrible!!!! you could do grade 5 theory in November that gives you time to prepare, as you dont want to be rushing around doing last minute revision or practicing!!!

Yeah i play piano and clarinet!! i also play saxophone, taught myself a bit of flute and guitar, and i used to play violin but starting again soon!!

Im 17 too!!! and i live in the north west!

Nat
Laura7112
lol i guess im sort of a fast learne, sort of an obsessive practiser! its my way of relaxing kind of!

well either gr 5 or gr 4, not sure cos of my non-lesson situation at the mo -hopefully have one before apr 30th! erm...i bought the gr4 and gr5 exam books last week, so have been looking thorugh and playing etc. which ones are you going to do for the pieces? are you going to do the jazz one? its not too bad except the od little bits of it, i make my timing up as i go along! n i dnt like the look of any of the gr4 pieces.

do u like A3? i think thats a pretty nice piece, cos its fast etc, but i dont like the trills!! Having only played a short while iv just avoided them!

How long have you been playnig? And did you get very far with guitar?

Laura
saxlover
im not getting very far with guitar because i just cant find the time to really concentrate on it as ive got other music exams and stuff!!

Ive played the piano on and off since i was 9ish!!it kind of went like this:did grade 1 stopped for 2 years, did grade 2 stopped for a year, did grade 3 stopped for a year and now im doing grade 4 in june, 5 in november and hopefully 6 next june!!!

for grade 4 im doing A3 rondo in F
B2 Watchmans song and
C1 Sunset over stac pollaidh

and for grade 5 im doing A2 allegro molto
B2 Lied of maybe B1 etude inF
and im not sure for the C piece yet probably Bossa Nova!

if you are an obsessive practicer thats good!! your a bit like me, practicing makes me relax!!!! i practice loads every day and virtually all day in the hols!!!

it would be good if you could get hold of your teacher esp if you want to do an exam in june coz you will need her guidance at least to start with.

Nat
Laura7112
Yeah i no, i really need a lesson before closing date to decide if i am doign gr4 or gr5 in the summer, or if im just gonna wait n do gr5 near xmas.

yeah love practising!! i started with a really ###### piano, bought it for £100 as my parents woudnt buy me one, then i taught myself a few months, finally they saw i was improving fast so i was allowed lessons and a brand new piano - altho i had to pay for half..

I think bossa nova is quite cool altho not as jazzy or light as some other pieces, i quite like jazz pieces, theres are some books by the composer of that piece, MIke Cornick and they're really good. yeah i might do the etude one for B because all of the others are just pants!

its so expensive though dont u think, the lessons then the music books, then the exam books, and the exams! its just ridiculous. and now i am buying guitar books too! yeah i prioritise piano over guitar too, so not getting v much practise on that, but i have a friend who said he'd help me learn which is good.

so what sort of stuff do you play on piano then? i like the "normal" classical type pieces!! lol, like the one i said for gr5, A3. .....fur elise, etc etc. altho i played a funny piece called the Wild Horseman by Schumann i think - fav, try it if u can, its about gr 4 i think!.

Laura
saxlover
do you mean Proud Horseman coz i played that for grade 3!!!!!!! great isnt it!!

I like most music really!! at the moment though im in love with mozart(his piano pieces and clarinet works!) yeah i like fur elise too!! my parents dont tho as ive played it nearly every day for the past 3yrs!!!lol

yeah it is expensive, but i work so its not too bad for me! but i actually like buying music books!!! last saturday i went to Chester(near where i live) and spent 5hours in 2 shops!! both music shops. i just sit there and look at books!!! im so sad!!!

do you have a clarinet coz if you do start playing it again its really good!!!

Nat

ps i hope you dont think im obsessed with music or anything!!even tho i am!!!
Laura7112
no not proud horseman i havent heard that one. yeah i generally like all music - i'll listen to anything, beach boys to beatles to pink to mozart, to eminem - u name it lol, i love 60's songs hence i think prob why i got the guitar.

yeah i work too, well i worked full time last summer in my college holidays, and now work at argos so its not too bad, but cos i have to save for my gap year too! ( the piano put rather a large dint in the funds for that......!!)

I love sheet music too, we only have one music shop in darlington and the staff are snotty, but i go every other day sometimes (!) and usually buy something. Sometimes like pop books, sometimes classical, n sometimes the exam ones...I bought the grade 5 scales/arpeggios for £1 in the sale today, god there is a lot lol!!

i think what i might do, as i havent heard from my piano teacher yet, i might not enter an exam this time - or if i do, just do the theory for gr 5 (i havent taken any theory exams yet, but taught myself to about gr2 so i better get learning - what book do u no should i use, there is an AB guide to theory and then a little red one that is supposed to be up to gr5? then do the gr5 practical in the next session as i dont think my teacher will be so focused after her mother dies.

lol i like that - 5hrs! our shop is really small, can't quite spend that long! But im going to York sometime to look at campus accommodation for uni, and i plan to go shopping - they apparently have good music shops!

Don't still have a clarinet - tried to get my friend to sell me hers (the one who took my place in the lessons) but she says it has sentimental value! And can't really justify buying a new one or even a decent second hand... would like to learn, don't know if i could do much better than with flute, cos my lungs are a little bit behind most ppls! i like the fact that clarinet can sounds reaaally jazzy n bluesy! What grade are u on clarinet? Do you play jazz type stuff lots?

lol i did that, i learnt fur elise before i had lessons, when i was teaching myself bout bass clef, so it was literally like this; learn right hand, play over and over again until rememberd it all........THEN work out allllll the left hand notes one by one, and add them in, remembering them one by one cos i couldnt read bass clef yet............and abracadabra u have fur elise lol, and yes, every single day since then i have played it almost!! (in particular my family love (!) the evil bit in the middle where it goes really low and u keep repeating A in the left hand...........hilaaaaaaarious entertainment to see them get sooooooo irritated!

Laura

The littl red book is a bit out of date now... there is a bit more on the syllabus now. You would be better getting the pink one 'The AB Guide to Music Theory'.
Then go through the wrokbooks and some past papers.
saxlover
Hi again Laura!!

yes i think it would be best to not enter for this session of exams because of the situation with your piano teacher, even though u practice a lot you might only have a month 2 prepare if you get the 1st week.

ive got the little red book!!! ive also got a pink and blue book but they dont separate it into grades. you should by Music theory in practice nooks by Eric Taylor. they go from grade 1-8 and just work through them making sure you understand everything!

yep ###### of a lot of scales etc for grade 5 piano!!!lol

im playing grade 8 stuff on the clarinet and hope to take the exma next year if all goes to plan! i dont play that much jazz stuff but im going to an audition next week for a jazz big band in my area as they want 2 clarinettists of grade 7+ and my teacher has said it would be good for me to go!

yes fur elise is sooooo great but very annoying for parents!!!lol

one of the shops i go in is quite small too but they know me coz im always in there so its great!!

Nat
Laura7112
hello hello!

Hmm yes i agree...unfortunately, because altho i hate exams, i think it keeps u motivated! I started looking at the scales today....... huh.gif

because Ive only done gr3, none of the others, then i didnt have to do a lot of the easier scales!! so its like........umm..... what, only one sharp??? sort of thing!

Yeah thats whats annoying, i think iv practised a fair bit so far lol, and have my C piece the jazzy one quite up to standard to get an o-k mark..... so i *could* possibly get them up to standard if i was lucky and was having my lessons etc...but then there are the scales too..... ohmy.gif

Ok, for the theory i had the ......er.....gr1 and gr2 work-books, i think thats what u mean? the ones by eric taylor, but it doesn't have the actual info in, just questions so u can test it out, yes?

thats the prob, i got these when i started, theyr good, but would i need to buy the gr3, gr4, AND gr5 for the gr5 theory? .....i guess so, because Id have to cover the earlier stuff too... Id be quite happy to do theory (apart from making up the rhythms.....borrrrrrrring! cos its not like the practical where someone is judging u as u play! I can do written stuff much better (i think!)

ooh sounds fun, band stuff - thats kinda why i wished id kept clarinet up! piano can be a very lonely instrument boo hoo.....lol! Id love to play in an orchestra or band or something, my friend plays violin or something and i thought about trying that but my parents would hate me for it!!

I was playing my guitar today tho, and whilst i thought u no, this is a pretty cool instrument to learn, i feel happier and more at home no my Kawai Piano! i realyl irritate my friend who is trying to teach me guitar, by EVERY time he comes round trying to basically apply everything about piano to it!! lol.....i tried apparently to play both lead guitar and the background guitar in one go! wink.gif

I had a look on the AB website a few weeks ago, but it didnt have dates for the june july exams - only said u could do them if u lived in ireland! lol confused me a bit. and are the other exams in the November December time?

lol whoops rather long post hehe, will let u read it all now!!

Laura
saxlover
Hi

ah yes a lot of scales!!lol

yes i find the easy scales like C major and G major etc harder than Db major!!!lol

The theory books i have are workbooks called Music theory on practice by Eric Taylor.yes it would be best to get gr3,4 and 5 books to work on the stuff you will have missed, i did that when studying for gr5 theory.

yea the band seems fun, its a week today i go to audition aaaaaahahhhhh!!!!!!
i used to play the violin and ive just started playing again-sound not good!!

im confused by the dates thing!! yes there are exams in november/december time as well!

Nat
Laura7112
OK good just checking!

ok i think i may just have to spend a lot of money and by several of these theory books! ......its sort of boring but i guess i sort of like learning stuff......so, should be ok..

is violin easy to play, is it cheap to buy? I wante to buy something i could play again that is more portable than a piano (!) and can be played as part of a group of people...but wasnt sure how much they cost wink.gif Does it sound atrocious at first because of the screeching!??! thats what concerns my family lol!!! (i am not naturally musical me is guessing!)

Laura
saxlover
At first it might sound off!!in fact it will but the more you practisethe better you will get!!!

I couldnt really tell much about prices as i had everything for violin given to me from an aunt!! i found it easy to play at first but i found it got quite hard quickly-thats just how i found it!! it will also help to get a very good teacher who encourages you etc..the reason i quit the violin was becasue i had a bad experience with my old teacher, hence didnt practice hence failed grade 4!!! to prove what an madman he was- i failed grade 4then the next lesson he gave me grade 5 pieces! blink.gif wink.gif

anyway you are better off asking in the viva violin forum they could give you better advice!
but still talk about piano here though!!

Nat
Laura7112
Ah ok then i will go pester in that forum too hehe!

I just really want to learn other stuff too!! Im loving the whole music thing at the moment... altho i wouldnt be able to get lessons probably (my parents were like; Laura, we've paid for half ur piano, we'r paying for piano lessons......uv just bought a guitar and now u want a VIOLIN/ClARINET/VIOLA/DRUMS(!)/FRENCH HORN/TRUMPET!?!?!??! )

Lol this has been an interesting game of how many instruments i can ask my parents if i can have!! funnily enough they refuse..... wink.gif

I may have to wait til im back from South Africa, which will be......June or July nxt yr, so i can maybe start when i go to uni (if can afford it!!!!!) would love to anyway.....im like, i dont wanna get a proper job, can't i just learn musi?? Going to attempt to teach a bit later when i can play properly!

Also im gonna be a primary teacher so could get some little kids to teach the basics, and will get practise as that is the job i am volunteering for in my gap year - ill find out if i still wanna teach when i get back lol!

would u like to teach piano later on...i think i read in another post u taught ur brother? Id teacha couple of little kids the basics, fun lessons etc, but i wouldnt attempt anthing else yet, im not good enough!

Laura
MBC_Tiger
sounds like you've got it all sorted there, lol, just like me.I have the same situation with all the instruments too.I have to wait a while for a piccolo, though I'm buying it myself anyway!

Fiona
You could try djmmusic.co.uk

I bought an Antoni violin outfit for my son £47.99 next day delivery.(free p&p) All sizes.

I'm very pleased with it. Wouldn't mind a new one for myself at that price !

These are on offer at the mo. They are usually £59.99.

MBC-Tiger might be worth having a look to see if they have a piccolo.

Nat, are you still playing your violin ?
I've been playing mine properly now for a few weeks since a 17yr break.

I'm surprised how different I sound in such a short time ! lol

The fingers still know what they're doing laugh.gif
saxlover
Hi Fiona

i got my violin down from its hiding place the other day, but it needs a service and new strings!

Nat
MBC_Tiger
Thanks I'll check it out!
Naomi xxxx

P.S Where can you get piccolo music books?
Fiona

Tried the usual internet music stores ? wink.gif
