I think it will be difficult for me to give you instructions online ... where are you from by the way? Let me know and I will see if there are early music experts in your area. Thanks!

Hello,

I am sorry that I am not familiar with the early music scene in the UK. Perhaps you can do some searches online and see if there's an early music shop/group near your place?

Why not get in touch with the Early Music Shop in Bradford, and see if they can help?

I've heard racketts played really impressively and with great dexterity at some of the Early Music courses I've been on!

Sorry, being very stupid here, but what is a "rackett"?!!! (Not of the tennis variety! laugh.gif )
Amber
Originating in Renaissance times, the Racket's a short double-reed instrument with nine parallel bores, all connected at alternate ends to form a continuous tube, with eight of them arranged around a central ninth. Looks like a kaleidoscope. In the last (ninth) hole a reed is inserted on a staple, much as in a shawm. The finger-holes were at the front and sides of the Racket, it is fingered by both hands in parallel, not left above right as in almost all other wind instrunments. Some Rackets are makde of hard wood, others of ivory.

This isn't me being intelligent.... I just looked it up in my music encyclopedia (Collins) because I was wondering the same thing as you!

2nd ben3, I don't know whether it's worth your getting in touch with DaCapo, who posts on these forums from time to time.

I know she is involved with a lot of Early Music activity in the Thames Valley, but she may well have some contacts in your area.

Cheers
