Originating in Renaissance times, the Racket's a short double-reed instrument with nine parallel bores, all connected at alternate ends to form a continuous tube, with eight of them arranged around a central ninth. Looks like a kaleidoscope. In the last (ninth) hole a reed is inserted on a staple, much as in a shawm. The finger-holes were at the front and sides of the Racket, it is fingered by both hands in parallel, not left above right as in almost all other wind instrunments. Some Rackets are makde of hard wood, others of ivory.
This isn't me being intelligent.... I just looked it up in my music encyclopedia (Collins) because I was wondering the same thing as you!
