you can get them by mail order - one will cost you around 20 pounds plus post. you also need to decide what 'a' u and ur oboe are tuning to. you can google the same info if you want. smile.gif

thanks but I've only found Oboe reeds
are they the same as BAROQUE Oboe reeds?

Email a few mail order companies.

If there are any specialist woodwind shops in Gloucester I haven't heard of them.

You could try Second Wind in Cheltenham.

what is the difference in oboe reeds?
sarah-flute
I don't know: I'm not an oboist.

Ring/email/write to/visit a specialist shop.

the length of the complete reed (from tip to the end of the bocal which is the tube it's tied on),
the width at the tip and the complete shape of the cane at its tip + the bocal (sometimes called a staple) and the thickness of the cane.
I doubt a modern oboe reed would fit a baroque oboe. I may be wrong.

Looking at a pic of a cor anglais, oboe d'amore or bassoon reed shows how different these reeds are. A baroque reed may also be cut to tune the instrument to a different pitch than the (A=440) we use today. I've never seen a baroque reed but I'll bet they are differently shaped from an oboe reed in subtle ways.
You would have to get one from a reed-maker which makes them expensive. You would also specify the strength. As a beginner you would want a soft reed. Any member of the oboe family can be difficult until you get enbouchure and breathing right. With "double-reed" instruments, the reed IS the mouthpiece.

Try Howarth in London. I would say they are THE shop when it comes to oboes and accessories.

A 440 unless you're in a baroque ensemble playing on period-tuned instruments.

It depends on the pitch of your instrument, whether it's A = 440 or A = 415.

The reed wouldn't make your instrument play at a particular pitch. Rather you have to know the pitch of your instrument and pick the appropriate reeds.
