I've just been reading through the thread about tearful pupils.
There's a series of books mainly aimed at parents which I think could be a helpful read for teachers too. They are American (but not aggressively so!), written by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. I can't find my copies at the moment so can't offer the full publishing details:
Siblings without Rivalry
Liberated Parents, Liberated Children
How to talk so kids will listen and listen so kids will talk
Topics discussed include recognising children's feelings and giving them a vocabulary to describe them, avoiding putting children into roles ("the musical one" etc.), anger management for parents and children.
In case you think the titles sound a bit heavy, let me just say that the style of writing definitely isn't, and there are little cartoon strips giving graphic summaries of the points made chapter by chapter.
