Full Version: A Good Site To Check Out For! Audio Exam Demos

Hi everyone,

Below are some links to the audio demonstration and explanation of each and every piece of all grades (G1 to 8 only) by Professor David Gwilt . Plus a full demo of each piece by some prof pianists at the end of the explanation. They are broadcasted thru a radio station in HK. I don't know if there is such programme in England. Perhaps yes but I may not know. Well, anyone interested is welcomed to pop in to have a listen to them. Worth a tour for those who are preparing for the 2005 to 2006 piano exams. laugh.gif

G1 and G2
G3
G4
G5 (session 1)
G5 (Session 2)

Ps:These audio demos are simply for guidance only. However, they are really popular among piano students preparing for the exams cuz they are free!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

From what I have listened to so far the Grade 4 on misses off the peice by Beethoven
*

I'm not familiar with the G4 syllabus this year, but the RHTK recordings only include the pieces in the book; does that exclude the Beethoven?

Yes, Professor David Gwilt only provided explanation and demos of the pieces in the purple book in the links I gave. However, I remember he also provided the demos and explanation of the alternatives of each grade at a later time (for the past syllabus of 03 to 04). I will double check if he's going to upload the alternatives sometimes later this year or early next year. Hope the recordings help in some way, everyone. tongue.gif

Many thanks for this!

Below is a post that students can be directed to, to help them find their pieces via the website with full instructions. Pupils can be given a handout saying:

ABRSM PIANO PIECES 2005-06 VERY HELPFUL TIPS AND LISTEN TO THE PIECES!

Go to the website http://forums.abrsm.org/index.php?showtopic=9825

It only takes a few seconds to get listening – full instructions are found in Post Number 11 (numbers at the right hand edge).

ABRSM PIANO PIECES 2005-06 VERY HELPFUL TIPS AND LISTEN TO THE PIECES!

These are fully explained instructions in case it helps – it’ll only take a few seconds and you’ll be listening to your pieces!

Note: Only the pieces found in the normal (purple) pieces book are included on the website at the moment, not the other "Alternative" pieces.

Go to post number one at the top of this page and click on the grade you want, and a new webpage will start opening. On this webpage (there’ll still be a button at the bottom of your screen to show this page), come back to these instructions.

When the new webpage opens, find the word “Listen” half way down the middle of the page, and click on one of the icons to the right (whichever you usually use on your computer: Windows Media Player is the one on the left, and Real Player is the button on the right).

A new box appears – choose “Save”, and then when the next box appears, make sure it says “Desktop” at the top (or somewhere you can easily find the file), and then click “Save”. A new box appears after just a second or two, saying “Download complete” – best to then select “Close”. Then go to the place on your computer where you saved the file (while still linked up to the internet).

If you’re a real computer whizz, the usual thing at this point is to scan a downloaded file with your antivirus program, by right-clicking on the file and choosing to scan with your antivirus program. No problems are found here, of course.

Then double click on the file and it will open up Windows Media Player or Real Player, and (as long as you’re still linked up to the internet) the recorded radio program about your piano pieces will start to play. There may be 30 seconds or so of a different radio program at the start, so wait a few seconds for the program about the piano pieces to start.

You can go forward or rewind using the controls on your Windows Media Player or Real Player, to find the information and demonstrations of the particular pieces you are learning.

As you may have seen in post number one at the top of this page, the pieces for your grade may be split into 2 or more radio programs, so if you need the other radio program, just take a couple of seconds to download from the other link in post number one (and follow these intructions again), double click on it, and have a listen!

Fantastic, many thanks for that site. As a new teacher it's good to know that you can make sure you're on the right lines.

I can get the website and find the Listen button but when I click on it it just plays, I don't get the box asking me to Save, so I can't go any further. Has anyone put it on their website so I can have a go from another source?

You say it plays, do you mean that as in it works? If so then you don't need to do anything else: just listen to it!

It's not possible (well not permissable) to mirror the content as RTHK own the rights to the broadcast so one isn't allowed to re-host it without their permission (and no doubt that of the ABRSM).

But your post says that you can download and Save it on your own machine and I can't do that - I don't get the new box with "Save" on it.

It only saves for a second or two, and then the when the file that has been saved is double clicked, it then uses Windows Media Player (or Real Player) to play the file as it downloads the rest of the program as you listen. The downloaded file seems to just be a link in some way. Make sure you click not ON the word "Listen", but to the RIGHT of it, on one of the two buttons.

Hope that helps - maybe someone more expert with computers can help further. I have Windows 98SE, but I wouldn't think that would make any difference to the process.

Thanks - looks like I'll just have to listen to it on-line.

I think the saving is causing some confusion: the actual file with the audio in it must be listened to when one is online as DomRUK says. The thing is in two files, the file that one saves is simply a little document that contains a link to the second file which is the actual audio content (anyone interested open the first file that's downloaded in wordpad and you'll see what it is). The first file can be downloaded the second file must be streamed as you listen to it (this is designed so that people can't download it because copyright is only allowed for people to listen to not to be able to keep the file). So in short for legal reasons you have to actually listen to it online and they've made it so that it can't be downloaded on purpose (of course it's okay to download the little file that lets you play it).

Why not right click the links and pick 'copy shortcut' (or whatever the option is called in your browser) and then paste the resulting link into the address bar?
