Advice about a job or taking up the cello?

I'm not too good at offering careers advice, so I think I'll stick with talking about the cello.

Bearing in mind they are not cheap instruments to buy the best way to start would be to hire a cello. The minimum is usually three months (a school term) but there's rarely a maximum period on hire.

If you decide at some later point that you wish to purchase, have a word with Liz (Elidatrading) as she can offer good instruments at reasonable prices - with an approval period too, if you live in the UK.

Good luck...on finding a job and in your playing too!!

Some points to consider.

1. A teacher is essential. It's very easy to pick up bad habits which will, in time, completely block progress and will have to be painfully undone.

2. Learning to play a string instrument is a long process, but is rewarding. Do you have the time available to study?

3. Here's a few web sites:

Internet Cello Society

Internet Cello Society Forums @ www.ezboard.com

Good luck! smile.gif

wow thankyou for the advice biggrin.gif i'll take a peek on the websites!
i'm sending in 2 CV's for jobs tomorrow, one of the places had a vacancy, the other said they would get back to me... (huh.gif)
i am planning on hiring a cello for 4 months from our local music shop, then another 4 if it goes well. if, after that, i want to carry on i can purchase the cello i have hired with VAT off (using it in schools) and the £100 i will have spent on hire smile.gif which i thought was quite a good deal!
im also hoping to find a teacher who will take me on for 20-min lessons, as i won't have a lot of funding spare whilst saving up to buy the cello, but i dont know if many do that, otherwise i'll have to stretch to 30mins! at one point i did consider trying to teach myself but im glad i didn't because i wouldn't have had a clue where to start!
thankyou for all the advice! hopefully in a within few months i can join the ranks of cello students tongue.gif
