Five. Grade 5 theory, grade 5 and 6 piano, grade 8 clarinet, grade 6 flute. I was looking over grade 8 theory but since I'm now doing musicology I'll certainly get at least that level! I might still do it for diploma prerequisites though.

Grade 1-8 piano....Grade 1-7 theory, will be doing Grade 8 theory next year.
I have counted my average mark for both and I seem to be always in the merit band.

Much better than being in the fail band isn't it

? No need for the anger.
I've done 5 exams grades 1-4 piano and grade 5 theory.

but they're all spaced out over the last 7 years!
I found out that my higest piano mark was in both grade 1 and 8! So I started off good, then dipped down, then gradually rose again. weird

same sort of thing with theory.

That update was useful because I originally voted for two, then Jo.clarinet reminded me about the theory exam last year!

Gr 1-8 piano, 1-7 theory, LRSM teaching (1992 syllabus - more written papers!), CT ABRSM, and AMusTCL ( a trinity theory diploma).
I sometimes hope to do another instrument and do the grades for that too.

Flute 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 (all that were available in the 1970s).
Piano 3, 5, 7 (don't like even numbered exams, obviously!)
Recorder 8
Theory 1, 5, 6 and 6
Total: 13
The two Grade 6 theories were because the original exam I took back in the 70s is not valid any more. If I wanted to take DipABRSM teaching I need the current syllabus. So I retook it 2 years ago.

That's interesting about your theory, Andante - I had presumed that my theory would not be valid because 1) I can't produce proof and 2) I think it was Trinity, not AB. I didn't realise that the AB's own syllabus was no longer valid either.
I didn't assume that my college harmony would be a useful alternative.
I have 1 2 3 4 5 6 in piano and grade 8 organ - so if I wanted to take Dip I'd probably need to take grade 8 piano too. Wouldn't want to take Dip in organ teaching as I already have an organ teaching diploma.

I did have a listed substitution for the theory: an OU course I took in the 1980s. But I couldn't find the certificate, and, although I considered asking the OU for a replacement, retaking the exam seemed the simplest option. It also brought me up to date from a teaching perspective. I just need to summon up the energy to do 7 and 8 now.
I had to send of copies of my Grade 8 certificate and my marriage certificate with my DipABRSM entry as I had taken them too long ago for them to have a record of it (and with a different name, which didn't help).

I've tried editing twice to get the quotes right, but have given up. The first quote in the box is from me, the second is maggiemay's reply.

= 26. The only one I failed was grade 4 clarinet, in 1987, when I was 10. It was also the only Trinity exam I took, but that's not why I failed - I just wasn't ready.
Next year I'm going to try to take Grade 8 Saxophone and Grade 7 Piano, although if I manage to pass the piano it will be a miracle.

I've only ever done four - Grade 8, ALCM and two end-of-year organ scholarship exams. Nothing makes me focus like an exam; performances are great, but to have the critical approval of experts is something else. Performing means 'do a good job of whitewashing th dodgy bits'. You don't get away with that in an exam.

Actually, I disagree, viz a comment I received recently: "There was some rhythmic freedom ... used to ease a technical difficulty" LOL
