Is there any way to get hold of old ABRSM examination pieces? I mean the really old ones, from 1998 and stuff. The shops only sell the current syllabus... there's a particular piece (Andante in A by Bertini, G4 piano) that I'm looking for, but I've found some really nice music in previous syllabi and I'd like to get them.

See if you can find someone locally with older children who have been through the exams... I have a large selection in my music stool! Some piano teachers also keep a stock of old exam books, particularly the higher grades. You sometimes come across a good haul in charity shops too - some Oxfam shops specialise in books & music (there are good ones in Malvern and also in York i believe)

Take a look on ebay, I've found quite a few

You might be able to find the same piece in a different book - you shouldn't need to buy a specific exam book for it (although these are often the cheapest option). Try a search on http://www.abrsmpublishing.co.uk or a music retailer's website.

The ABRSM certainly publish books of "exam pieces throughout the years" as it were for violin - the First Violin and Second Violin albums for instance - so it's well worth researching if they do a similar thing for piano.

Ebay is also good for music, I've had some good old music off their, old exams pieces and such smile.gif nothing terribly exciting or esoteric, but some good music.

That's exactly what I thought - REALLY OLD??? 1998 is only a few years ago!

I've got a collection of old AB piano exam books, partly from when I took my own piano exams, partly from teaching and partly from picking the odd one up here and there in charity shops etc. My oldest one (from a charity shop) is from 1928 - can anyone beat that? smile.gif

Wow. biggrin.gif Thanks everyone... and I know 1998 isn't that old, but I would only have been 8 then and it was a few years ago. tongue.gif

Yes they do! Perhaps you could borrow it from your local library - I've borrowed one for piano from ours (it had a piece in the 1980 syllabus which I'm playing for grade 5! - oh, and it was grade 5 then as well wink.gif ).

My oldest inherited exam book is (I think) 1965)
