Hi every1!
My piano teacher has recently gone mad over a composer called Ludovico Einaudi. His music is a modern style and is absolutely gorgeous!!!
There is one piece called 'Le Onde' that sends shivers down my spine whenever i hear it!!!
Anyway it seems that he isnt very popular cos i could only get his sheet music off the internet.
So does anyone else share the passion for this Italian composer??
Thanx

Well that was the thing, i ordered all my sheet music off the internet cos my local music store can take months to order books in!!
I bought 'Ludovico Einaudi - The best of' its got 36 songs, a few from each of the 4 single books. It was £30 but well worth it!! Its a good source of ideas for gcse music!
The thing about his music is also that you have to put your own interpretation into how it should sound - not just play the notes as written

His music is in all good music shops all of it. I have found his music wonderful to play (in small doses) and great for left and right hand coordination. I especially like Il Giorni. Yes, tune in to Classic FM where he has become quite a cult.

I'm so glad you all know about Einaudi! I love his music, and it's not too difficult to play either! I got the sheet music for 'Eden Roc' from my local music shop at Christmas, and I also have his CD 'Echoes'. My favourites are 'Le Onde' and 'Nefeli'. Do any of you listen to Classic Fm? he's on it allllll the time. It's very nice music to go to sleep to I find!lol

Your faves are the same as mine and I LOVE Classic Fm.His work doesn't sound too difficult because it sounds quite arpeggiated.

Naomi- have you got some of his sheet music? You really should because it's the sort that's easy to play but sounds really impressive! It is very arpeggiated and the left hand is mostly chord patterns, sort of Alberti bass style in a lot of them. Have you ever played the theme tune from the film 'The Piano'? (called 'the heart asks pleasure first' by Michael Nyman)- it's very like some of Einaudi's music, and it's so nice too!

Hi,
I went to see Einaudi in Bristol and to be honest, I was disappointed. As someone said earlier, his music is nice to play in small doses - and I also like 'Le Onde' - but a whole 2 hours of him and the arpeggios / alberti bass was a bit much!
But if it gets people interested in classical music or if it inspires piano playing, great! Personally, I prefer Michael Nyman...

He really caught my attention when I first heard him, and I got 'the book' and enjoyed playing it, then I got the CD and then I got bored.
A bit repetitive don't you think?
Small doses on classic FM is quite nice, but not much more for me.

Hi trio
I absolutely agree and I had the exact same experience as you. The novelty has really worn off for me now and when I think how excited I was when I first heard them.... Yes, as I said from the beginning, "small doses" but I could not sit through a whole concert...!
Having said that, the pieces are lovely to play and great as studies because I still have difficulty with the arpeggios and there are a number of difficult left hand chord stretches in places!
I prefer Nyman, too, and also Philip Glass.

Hi Mrs M,
I've just looked up Michael Nyman and seen 'The cook, the thief, his wife and her lover'
I take it that he has done the sound track is to the film ?
I've seen that film. Very good but very strange too !
I'm just assuming he is the composer.

Michael Nyman did indeed write the soundtrack to 'The Piano'. I play it all the time- it's beautiful! A lot of Einaudi's music reminds me of michael Nyman actually, can't say which I prefer! Yeah, so Einaudis music isn't great like Beethoven's or Mozart's, it's not exactly 'intellecutally stimulating', but it's lovely to listen to and I think its popularity has introduced a lot of people to classical music and piano playing...so he has to be a good thing!

I definitely agree with hgirl in that his (Einaudi's) music is great in that it is accessible enough to bring piano music to the attention of those who might have been otherwise intimidated by a composer like Beethoven who wrote in a much more 'demanding' style. Einaudi has certainly had plenty of exposure on Classic FM - he fits right into their style. Not quite so keen on him myself, but then I'm a weird kinda guy

(for example I get excited by the way drums were recorded on records like "When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zepelin!!!!!!

).
Re. Michael Nyman: It's interesting how contemporary composers are so often associated with film music nowadays. It's pretty rare to find composers like Einaudi or Karl Jenkins who get exposure for being composers in their own right... Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but I just thought it was worth mentioning.

Oh I disagree - I think Palladio deserves to make Jenkins famous without film music, as it's one of my favourite songs.

I think you misunderstood me DavidMusic - I didn't mean Einaudi or Jenkins didn't deserve to be popular/famous/recognised for their work, I meant that it's not that often nowadays that a composer becomes as successful as either of those two examples outside of the film score world. Having re-read my last post I can see how you misinterpretted the last paragraph. Don't get me wrong, I think it's excellent that there ARE some composers getting popularity like those two without having to be associated with a film!

Indeed. Personally (like many of us, I suspect) I'm an absolute elitist when it comes to buying music, and I won't buy pop or rock music, only classical and jazz. With this awful modern stuff, I just borrow CDs - there's very rarely re-listening value.
