I was wondering which family was most widely played. I play brass, and I have picked up some basic piano. What about you?

it has strings....enough said
what would YOU put it is? strings like i said, or like Sibelius thinks it is as being a "pitched percussion"??

so...

Pitched percussion is a possible, strings is true also but one could say it needs differentiating from bowed strings, and to play it has more in common with the piano in many ways than anything else

And where would one put a Harpsichord? Hmm. Strings? Keyboard? Harp on its side in a box?
Or organ actually - MrB, you're the expert: is it woodwind, keyboard seems to be too simple a term for such a complex instrument!

ah....it's not very smart not to include a choice of "Strings and piano" because many strings players plays the piano as well. ie. Beethoven

Of course under the argument of 'it has strings' the piano is also a string instrument

YAP: *bows*
AP: LOL! Good point

it has hammers too - so is it percussion?

Oct 3 2005, 10:04 PM
As far as I recall, in the old system where there was as many sections as Viva Digeridoo and Viva Triangle, Viva Piano came under the Viva Strings section, so if the ABRSM says Piano is a string instrument, I'd say that Piano is a string instrument!

Newbie here...........
I play=piano+cello+french horn(played it when i was in school band)

piano is percussion (because the strings are hammered) harpsichord is strings (because they are plucked) and organ is a woodwind (because it uses air to make sound) but to simplify it the keyboard family is now a recognized family by most musicains

I know it's a lot and yes she is VERY musical. She has just completed her Grade 6 AMEB exam on piano. She can also play the double bass (I only just learnt that). Her whole family are very musical. The amazing thing is she is only 15. Her brother is 14 and he plays the Alto Saxophone and piano and can also play the Cello and her sister who is 8 can play the violin and the piano and wants to take up the flute when she is older.

She has also recently made it into the Queensland State Honours Band for clarinet although she doesn't know whether that it is her favourite instrument.
