I want to go to bed. Stop posting. I'm addicted to this forum...
Every brass player I know drinks a lot, most smoke.
I have NEVER done a concert without a glass of wine (or 4) beforehand. Horrible stagefright.

Err I'm pretty sure that this forum shouldn't be condoning the use of alcohol to combat stage fright!
Still, for what it's worth, the correlation between brass playing & drinking is well documented. The wierd thing is that you can normally tell what instrument someone plays just by meeting them. Flautists, harpists, violinists, even horn players - stand out a mile!!

It is so true about the brass-playing/beer-drinking links!

But it really applies mainly to the lower brass, and maybe the trumpets. For some reason horn players aren't usually included in that steroetype, but I don't know why because all the horn players I know could drink most tuba players under the table! In fact, the members of the 'heavy' brass section don't like horn players much. I don't know why. Any ideas from a trumpet perspective??

well, from the trumpet perspective, we like precision.... and we take joy in the fact that the horn is the hardest instrument to pitch. so as a trumpeter i can say it is because we find it funny at all the wrong notes horns play.
however, i do agree that horns can drink aswell, my friend plays horn and he can drink. lol

I asked one of the Bass players why they moved to that from euphonium, there answer "You can fit more cans in the case"
