Giorgos Koumendakis
Biography
b. 1959 Rethymnon, Crete. Began composing aged 15. Studied in Athens with Diamantis Diamantopoulos; later in Paris with Pierre Boulez and Iannis Xenakis. Awarded Prix de Rome in 1992. Works, encompassing wide range of idioms, have been performed in international festivals in Europe and the USA and are recorded on Greek record labels. Artistic Director of
the Skalkottas Ensemble, 1999-2001; Director of Music for opening and closing ceremonies at the Athens Olympic Games, 2004. Output includes works for orchestra, chamber ensembles and solo instruments as well as oratorio, opera, music for dance and music for ancient tragedies.
