David Lyon
Biography
David was born in Walsall and studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London and at Bristol University. After early success with his Divertimento for Small Orchestra he concentrated initially on short tuneful orchestral works, most of which have been recorded and broadcast world-wide. David has also written vocal and general instrumental music including concertos for piano, French horn and recorder, several suites for string orchestra and an English Mass.
In 1976 a commission from Coventry Schools for a youth opera, The Reckoning, revived his interest in music theatre. There followed a series of 'adventures' for audience and orchestra for the Milton Keynes Festival, including a re-enactment in narration and song of the Battle of Trafalgar and Game, a popular set of 'football variations'.
A collaboration with the playwright ACH Smith resulted in a musical adaptation of Tom Stoppard's play Albert's Bridge and a comic opera Doctor Love, based on Moliere.
David's orchestra music is available on the Marco Polo, Naxos, ASV and Olympia labels, including an exclusive Marco Polo disc with David Lloyd-Jones conducting the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.
