Biography

b. 1946 London. Read Classics at University of Nottingham, then studied composition there with Arnold Whittall; also with Nicholas Maw. In 1970s taught at University of Sussex and obtained Doctorate for his work on Mahler. During this time, he collaborated with Deryck Cooke in the preparation of a performing edition of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony; also worked with Benjamin Britten and Imogen Holst at Aldeburgh.

The core of his output is orchestral and he has been Associate Composer of the London Syphony Orchestra since 1992; has also written large body of chamber and ensemble music. Also enjoyed considerable success as a record producer, winning a Grammy nomination for the highly acclaimed recording of Gorecki’s Third Symphony, and is founder of NMC Recordings.
